Cool snow in the airfilter AGAIN!

we are having a snow storm in Va today. i have a new air filter in my truck. after driving about 30 miles to take my wife to work the check air filter message came on. the filter has snow in it. is there any thing that can be done to prevent this from happening, how can i unthough and dry the filter? and last but not least is there anywhere web site phone number or any thing to complain to ford. if enouph of use are having this problem and complain ford will have to fix this design flaw. i do not want to put a aftermarket intake on my truck and chance voiding they warrenty... P.S. this is the second time we have had snow, and the second time i have had this problem....

Welcome to FTE. You relate to a known problem. If you had bot your truck in one of 12 or 13 northern states, you would have received a grill cover to protect from having this happen. No sense starting a war, cause it has been tried before.

Search on the site about grill covers and you can get all the info you need. I bot my truck in GA but travel frequently to PA in the winter. I bot a nice fitting unit for about $100.00.

Best thing to do is open the hood and let it dry out. Don't force the issue with anything crazy, and no need to change the air filter, so they say.

NOPE. Just a decoration. Look under the hood. The air comes in where you have the snow. CRAZY??? YEP!!!!!

would disconecting the tube that goes into the air filter and let it pull air from the engine compartment help when running in the snow?

I did a little searching for you. Here is a link on FTE that you can get plenty of info, and probably some photographs. All of us were PO'd at first when FORD was selectively giving covers to SD/6.4 owners.

Here is the link:

I would not reinvent the wheel. Just cover the grill and problem solved. check the link out I gave you above. GREAT photograph of my truck!

i pulled the air filter and in the bottom of the filter housing is a large intake hole that does pull from the vents in the side of the fender. i am guessing the small intake line is designed to try to pull warm air from the motor to help the filter from stopping up with snow and ice, but it doesn't work well.

yes the small hose is suppose to draw in warm air. I live north of you and have never had a problem with the snow...for now try some cardboard to help out till you get a cover

Damn you have a good looking truck! Love that color! And while in a jovial mood, perhaps FORD designed the small hose to MELT THE SNOW coming into the air filter, if it is a mild snow fall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hahahha

P. S. Why is your new avatar have your truck on a carry bed tow truck?????

Where is the opening by the right fender that's mentioned? When I looked at the opening on my air filter hose it was right over the right value cover on the engine & not the fender.

Im surprised the aftermarket hasnt designed a small bolt in shield of some sort. Just hard to believe those covers are really the only solution. Think I may do some tinkering.

Yes- There is an easy fix. Being from NM I too did not get the grille cover. However, the mountains of NM get lots of snow. When I bought a new tv I cut the box it came in to cover a large portion of the radiators, and painted the front black. In cold weather I open the hood and slip it in against the radiators. In warm weather I pull it out. Total process takes 4 seconds. The nice thing about doing it this way is your truck doesn't have that big blanket across the front. The truck doesn't look any different than any other day.

To prove this works, I am currently stationed in Quantico, VA and yesterday I drove to DC and back in that same snow storm you were talking about. No problems for my truck.

Good luck.

I posted this on another thread today.

There is a new TSB for the snow plugged filter; looks like if you have the problem they are to give you the grille cover, replace your filter minder if it isn't a certain model; and install a filter box gasket with snow deflector.

Part number for filter minder is: 8C3Z-9N622-A; says to replace if it doesn't have engineering number 8C34-9N622-AB on the part.

Filter Gasket is: 9C3Z-9C664-A
Grille cover is: 8C3Z-19A414-A

New TSB is 10-2-2 6.4L AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM RESTRICTION - SNOW
dated, Jan 22, 2010; replaces TSB TSB 09-6-8

It would seem if you have this problem and are in your 36K/?yr warranty period you will get the winter grille cover even if you did not purchase your truck in one of the cold states that came with the cover. Point your dealer to TSB 10-2-2.
