Does anyone here know how to repair alternators? I have a mid-70's sixty amp alt that has a bad rectifier. I have looked at parts on the web and a stator-rectifier assy. can be had for 40 bucks but are not assembled. Does it need soldered or is there a special tool for this?

$40 bucks sounds about right for the cost of the rectifier only... are you sure that it includes the Stator?? The Stator is the center part of the ALT. Do you have any photos or a link with photos of the parts?
I would open up the ALT you have to see if this is something you want to try and repair, most are soldered. Sometimes all you need to do is resolder the connections to get it to work again. You can test the diodes to see if they are bad before you buy parts. You should install new brushes also.
I googled "how to rebuild alternators" and a lot of stuff came up, including some videos. I only have a dial-up connection so it's hard me to watch the videos.
The site was looking at for parts was springhill auto electric. They have upgrade parts and replacement parts and there are others. I was mistaken about the price, a rectifier kit for a 1G can be bought for under $20. An upgrade to 120 amps is only $65. The one I have is a chrome 1G that I have dis assembled and found the rectifier fried.
