Possible Hub issue?

Ok so this is what I have. I jacked up the front of the truck to check my ball joints. No issue there but I did notice that the right side has a weird noise coming from the hub. Or at least that's where it sounds like it is coming from. It kinda sounds like a spring that is being twisted. If that makes any since. It sounds like grinding sorta noise. I was going to clean and lubricate the hubs to see if that fixes the problem.

What do you guy's think. I tried to search for it but didn't find a whole lot of help.

Here's some info on the maintence Welcome to guzzle's Ford PSD Maintenance Web Page I just got my truck inspected last year and I told my mechanic friend to squirt some grease thru the ABS sensor holes while he had the tires off. I had no noise but had it done since he was in there. Sounds like you might be having hub problems from that grinding, subscribing..

My front left hub assembly started making a squeaking noise about the 180,000 mile mark or so...(can't really remember that far back any more...).

At any rate, to confirm there was a problem, I drove the truck around for a bit and then stopped to take some IR temperature measurements. I don't remember the actual numbers.....but the left front was about 60 degrees hotter than the right side.

I ended up replacing both units because....well, I really don't know why I replaced both. I just must love throwing money at my truck from time to time.

If you have an IR gun, you might try taking some readings to see if you have any problems.

I think Pops has a good idea for ya.When we replaced my b-joints we took the ABS sensor out and pumped grease through the hole while turning it slowly.Good luck

Good point Barry, a good wheel bearing grease he used, forget what brand and type but he said it was some good stuff, strickly for wheel bearings and related uses. As he was turning the tire while his helper squirted the bearing grease in, he felt the tire getting harder to turn so the grease was getting properly distributed within, he said it took alot of grease, he was amazed on how much it took.

This technique could save him some money if the bearrings just need a little grease.Do not know what they go for but grease is cheaper I am sure.....Thanks Pops

A properly maintained and serviced hub will give you many years of trouble free service. If you have front ABS, you have that hole going into the back there in the knuckle I believe, take the line and plug out and squirt away into that hole, lots of it, better late than never..Mine were way overdue but I had it done as soon as learned about it here.

This was covered pretty extensively in this thread:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...pics-here.html

Good reading for those wishing to (hopefully) extend the life of their front hub bearings.

on the top back, i have a tube with a cap on it, I have been oiling it for years, is this a good place to grease the bearings, or stick to pulling abs sensor? GREAT maintenance thread, parts are getting too @#$%^@ expensive!!!!

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to order the parts from ED and try tackling this issue next weekend. Hope it works. Going to squirt some grease into the ABS hole also.
