I was trying to set my timing yesterday, I have all the vacuum lines disconnected and plugged.
I set it to 14B and it started to idle nicely, but then the engine speed dropped and I saw the timing
jump at the same time about 8deg, then go back to
where I set it. This repeats itself until the engine will die. Also noticed that when the engined is revved, there is no mechanical advance at all.
Can there be something wrong with the distibutor's
mechanical advance? Does it have one? Its a '73 460 with a stock distributor out of a Lincoln.
Thanks for any help,
Rod
1973!The last year of points! Those were the days. With the points properly gapped,a good cap, rotor, wires, plugs and coil, the engine should idle steady enough to adjust timing to several settings and not die unless you go overboard. The up & down variations in timing you saw could be from the RPM flucuation of a poorly running engine,or,from a coil or wire that is giving up.I agree you should see advancement when you accelerate,so, the mechanical advance must be stuck closed or open.Remove the cap and try twisting the rotor. It should rotate under spring tension and pop back by itself. If not,i believe you can remove the plate the points are attached to for further inspection. And while you are in there, inspect the breaker plate for wear and check the ground strap to the dist. body.

Thanks Phillip
Down the road, I'll probably install one of those MSD setups I keep reading about, but for now I need to stay under my Wife's budget radar!
I'll take it out and apart tonite, to see whats what.

I took the distributor apart and the mechanical advance looked OK. I then cleaned up everything I could get to, roughed up any possible grounding surfaces and installed the points and condensor from the 360.
Boom, fired right up! Fast idle was smooth, regular idle was smooth, was able to set the timing correctly and set the idle to 650.
Don't know which thing did it, but I'm happy!
Of course the old beast couldn't totally bless me: I see that I have oil leaks at the rear of the manifold (again!), but thats another post ;-(
