I am doing a top end rebuild on a 390 in a 69 F100, and I'd like to convert to electronic ignition. I was asking at the auto parts store about using a MSD and was told that they had a kit from Crane that was cheaper and better. Anybody have any good or bad things to say about the Crane Cams electronic Ignition?
I used a duraspark unit out of a '76 ford truck also. My advice on electronic ignition would be to use the Hall Effect (magnetic) trigger type ignition. Some of the aftermarket type units use a LED type of trigger that I feel has a higher failure rate due to engine heat. The Pertronic brand conversion would probably be ok, especially when used with an MSD or Jacobs system.
Hope this helps...
Ps the Duraspark was really easy to hookup, just added a wire from the starter solenoid to the box and grafted in the plugs and connections from a junkyard donor Ford.
