Couldn't stop!!!

Has anyone ever had this happen with the V-10? I stopped at a toll booth, about 10 feet behind the car in front of me, with my left foot on the brake pedal. Suddenly, the engine raced, by itself, and I jammed both feet on the brake pedal, trying to stop, but the V-10 over-powered and I bumped into the car in front of me. Then the power surge subsided.

There was no damage and the guy was really nice about it but it scared the hell out of me. Any ideas what could have happened?

2001 EX w/ 6.8L. 104,000 mi.

No never had that happen, but could be IAC valve.

I have had that happen. It seems that I can catch a little of the accellerator pedal when my foot is on the brake. Scarey event.

Never had it happen, but if you think of it and have time to react flip it into neutral....I've had the throttle stick before while driving throwing it into neutral will stop your forward motion but will redline the engine likely, but possibly save you a major crash.

A bit strange - but I'd rule out the IAC valve as it can stick in either an open or closed condition but wouldn't cause unintended throttle opening just rough idle or starts. The throttle is cable operated so it stands to chance that the pedal may have stuck against the floor mat or something. What type of mats do you have and how are they attached? It may be time to clean the throttle body and linkage and lube it up as well.

sounds like you have a Toyota acceleration issue... but I would suggest you take it to the dealer for a once over just in case.... I agree with others that it sounds like the floor mat or something under the hood is pressing against the cable. check the throttle linkage at the throttle body for any obstructions. even the IAC would not elevate the RPM enough to overpower you stepping on the brake with both feet. you cannot get a wide open throttle condition without physically opening the air intake.... being that it didn't reoccur I would rule say its not any type of vacuum leak... as this is a big safety issue your dealer should bend over backwards to see if they find any problems....

Exactly what I think happened. Do you have aftermarket pedal covers etc?

Yep - right now it looks like that about 3.4 million answers! Ford has already announced a $1000 credit when you trade in a 95 or newer Toyota on any Ford. All this while they post their first annual profit in 4 years! Go Ford!

I actually re-read that part (left foot on break) couple of times just to be sure. I don't want to point finger and say things as I do not know the OP personally. But if you have an habit of using left foot on an Automatic, I suggest you changes your driving style. Consider this as a wakeup call and move on. If it is a manual trans then use your left foot for clutch only.

I had this happen on my thunderbird a couple of years ago. Its the throttle body! Disconnect the intake from the throttle body and clean the hell out of it. Just be glad this didnt happen to you when you were going 60mph like it happened to me.

Living here in South Florida this type of thing happens ALL THE TIME. Seems the seniors also drive with 2 feet. They drive thru walls almost daily. They claim that the car did it by itself. But after the vehicle is inspected the car always checks out fine. Also, when there is video you see the brakes are never touched.

Not suggesting that happened in this case. I would say a floor mat issue. I had that happen to me once. It didn't surge ahead but the car didn't slow down when I took my foot off the gas.

it wasnt the left foot brake i had a problem with , its that i had always (with the exeption of 1 car) driven a manual and needed the left foot for my clutch, wanted to bang it down when i was overtaking not good
