Well, I ordered my first set of fuel filters on Monday from www.dieselfiltersonline.com. I was very impressed to see them ship that same day and arrive here yesterday. I ordered the Racor filters specified for our trucks, as from what I hear they're the same filters as the Motorcraft ones and are a few dollars cheaper.
When I opened them up the first thing I noticed was this:
I think this is a real problem. This could let particles through that could damage my fuel system and I'm in the process of trying to get these filters exchanged.
If I'm correct that looks like the O ring for the cap and I would say that is the top filter since there is no membrane on it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
After changing both filters, you are required to cycle the fuel pump 6 times for 30 seconds each time to purge the air from the system. If that's not done then the system would be hard to start due to the air in the lines.
and if cycling the key doesn't seem to get it after several attempts you can depress the fuel shutoff switch and crank while holding, it may then start.
Well I heard back from the online retailer and they are sending me replacement filters ASAP.
I'm not positive that the small tear went all the way through the material, but I can say that it makes me very uncomfortable using it on a truck with an $8K fuel system that could be buggered by improper filtration. Since opening the filter to get a closer look might mean difficulty returning it, I'm just gonna exchange them for my peace of mind.
The biggest reason I started this thread was to remind everyone who does their own maintenance to thoroughly look at your filters before you install them. Just like Toyota and their gas pedals, nobody's perfect!
I pedpress the air valve stem on the top right just left of the brake fluid bottle. It gets a little messy sometimes but makes it quick if the cycling doesn't work.My diesel guy showed me that trick.Works good just messy at times.Just hold it till fuel comes out.
In Tom's defense, the filters he bought are Racor made, as are the fuel filters Ford sells; no difference whatsoever. Just doesnt have the Ford associated with it. Racor makes the filters Ford sells, so no less quality. I'm glad Tom pointed this out, as I didnt even look at mine when I changed them and it goes to show how easy it could happen even with quality filters. And Machinator, youre welcome. Senix made a good point also, one I didnt even think about but knew of. A good friend of mine's grandfather actually came up with that fuel shutoff idea when he worked with Ford years and years ago as a diesel engineer.
