Mice did something to my E150

I have a 2000 E150 with a Triton V8 5.4 L
It started hard about a week or so ago, just a few times, now it won't start at all. I had a buddy run the codes and it said something about the cylinder head temperature sensor. Where is this located?
Also we found a huge nest of mice under the aluminum intake and on top of the block.
What is the part at the top left side of the block, it's got a wire running to it and it is a square piece of plastic with a stud running through it and it has a nut on top of it. I can't get to it with a wrench the area is too small. The mice built the nest all around this piece. It appears to be some sort of sensor.

That would indeed be the cylinder head temperature sensor. Most likely the mice ate the insulation off of the wiring harness going to the sensor resulting in the DTC that you got. Good luck!

John,
Since I can't get at the CHT sensor without dropping the engine, can I take the wire harness off and plug a new CHT in and use it a dummy? I went to the local parts store and they never heard of a CHT sensor. Time for a new parts store!
I didn't see any wires that were chewed off, but it's not an easy task to see the wires. Would the CHT keep the engine from starting?
Just for fun I do have a 1992 F150 XLT for sale, and about 2 weeks ago a guy stopped by and put $100 down and said he would stop by and pick it up later in the week..... he hasn't been back!

The ECM would see the lack of signal from the CHT to alter fuel ratios keeping the mixture rich for a cold engine. This would certainly hurt fuel mileage. The mice very rarely eat the copper wire, just the plastic insulation. This would result in shorted wiring to ground or to other wires which can really mess up the signal the ECM is looking for. Hard to say what actually will be effected. Good luck!
