So i did the good ol' "put the oil cap upside down on the filler tube" blowby test the other day. The cap did not budge at all and i did not feel any actual pressure when i put my hand over the tube, but i did see smoke coming out of it. It doesnt have the "choo choo" affect. It's just a steady amount that comes out of the filler.
From my reading, this is pretty common with our trucks, but i just wanted a second opinion since i did not find a thread really dedicated to it. The guy at powerstrokehelp.com seems to think that if you have ANY smoke coming from the filler, you need a rebuild. I don't know what to believe.
Long and short of it is don't worry to much what that guy says. He is pretty far off on several things and this is another. If your cap sits there and only vibrates off you are fine. Granted this isn't the perfect test, but it works great. If you want to be more indepth try doing a compression test.
Your fine... Watch his videos for entertainment only...
You know whats really weird, i actually DO haha! When im bored i watch his videos because i get a kick out of watching how worked up he gets about things and just the way he talks with his lisp LOL.
I have heard of another test for blowby called the "Tee Shirt" test. I don't know the specifics, but a cotton tee shirt is folded into several layers and taped over the engine oil filler tube. The truck is taken out for a WOT run and when you return, you remove the tee shirt and count the layers that are soaked through with oil. The number of layers determine its condition. Not rocket science, by all means. I wish I had more info on this. I heard about it several years ago. Never did it myself.
