2002 psd 330,000 miles. Temperature as of late has been in the upper 20's at night. Plugging in truck at night or not plugging in truck I am getting the same results which are as follows:
Truck cranks right up.
Engine feels like it is missing.
Blue smoke from start up to warm up(pretty good fog of smoke).
Smoke seems to stop when going down highway.
When I stop I see a pretty good trail of smoke coming out of tailpipe.
Engine feels like it wants to go dead but doesn't.
Removed oil filler cap while engine is running, looks like the choo choo effect that has been referred to on this site.
Have never change glow plugs the GPS or the injectors.
Batteries have not been checked.
Bought diesel from different location because of traveling during Christmas holiday.
If I have water in the system I do not know how to purge it.
do you have blowby on it, if it blows off the cap thats not good your looking at a new engine if you do, mine smoked all the time and used tons of oil is this what yours is doing
Just to clarify Wesley's blowby test suggestion, turn the cap upside down and put it on the oil filler tube. The cap should stay put or rattle off from engine vibration, not blow off from blowby.
I cranked up Bessie, removed the oil filler cap set the flat side on the filler opening. It did not "blow" the top off. There is some blow by. It appears to be coming from the exhaust between the frame and the starter. The miss did not seem as severe. I came inside to post this, letting the truck run.
Is there soot on the firewall behind the turbo? That would indicate leaking up-pipes. Do you have a boost gauge? If so, what kind of readings are you getting? When you say between the frame and starter, I guess that could be the south end of the downpipe- where it connects to the exhaust pipe. I don't think I've ever heard of a leak there, but I'm no expert.
i think its burning oil indicating blue smoke when you check for the blow by put the top of your hand on it if you feel no pressure then your good what does your turbo sound like can your hear a clean spool is there any oil leaking on the engine anywhere
Does your blow by look like this. This was a shot that Dan posted and looks pretty common. Or is it puffing and quits and puffs and quits. YouTube - Ford Powerstroke Blow By

Reason: There are some vids of some chuga-chuga blow by on here some where but I didnt find it.
No soot on firewall.
No boost gauge (I don't know what that is).
I put my hand on the oil filler tube, no excessive pressure.
Turbo sounds OK (I have not heard any strange noises since this began).
Slight oil leak since 100,000 miles.
U tube video best describes my choo choo description.
yeah the injector O rings im not a expert on a 7.3 or either a turbo seal im hoping someone with this issue will chime in to, where is the oil leak you are describing
check your radiator over flow bottle for diesel fuel ! I've had to different motors in as many weeks with this symptom.. 1 motor had a cracked number 8 piston and the other motor is toast as well... probably cracked injector cups ! Do you have the CCV mod done ??? If so... is there lots of smoke out of the CCV vent ???
Your crank case vent (ccv) is vented into your turbo intake tube and sucked through your turbo.... The mod that everyone does is to take the vent off the drivers valve cover and vent it out the back of the truck or just straight down using some heater hose. If yours is still stock and vented into the turbo you won't be able to see if you are getting smoke out your ccv (crank case vent) Do a search on CCV mod in the forum and get the instructions on how too once you get your other problems sorted out ! Hope that helps.
