No Tail/Stop lights...2001 Excursion

...just lost all the rear lights last night!

Flasher's new, Turn Signal/Wiper switch new...all fuses have been checked...Relays I've checked are OK too...

Anyone think it's in the Headlight switch assembly?

Or any other ideas?

Thanks,
Ray in Nor Cal

If you do not have brake or turn lights, those have nothing to do with the headlight switch. If all of the lights, and both sides are dead including the license plate lights, it sounds like a wiring problem. Does your third brakelight work?

Thanks Dave,

I finally tracked down the problem this afternoon...a harness connection in the rear that connects to the 7-way trailer plug had gone on the fritz...some moisture damage, or something like that - I cleaned it up to cure my problem...

When I found that the backup lights would only light up dimly, I realized it must be a ground or connection problem - then it was a matter of tracking it down!

I wish Ford used better water-tight connectors back there by the bumper where they are exposed to the elements when the roads wet!

At least spray some wd40 on the connector. If you hunt around, you might find some special grease to put in the connector.

I am thinking that connector is probably not factory from your description. The factory trailer harness is separate from the vehicles lighting, it's not tied into the rear lights. What you have sounds like a aftermarket "t" adapter someone has bought to add a trailer plug into the rear lighting.

Dave,

Actually this is connector assembly is from the factory - the Ex came factory equipped with trailer tow package, 7-way plug, hitch, etc...

the connector I had trouble with is the main rear harness connector on the harness coming to the rear bumper area - depending what options are used on the bumper (backup alarm, Trailer Plug, etc) another 'rear' harness is plugged into this main connector...

this connector is a PITA to get at by removing the license plate and accessing through the hole in the bumper behind the plate!

I'll probably try removing the bumper to get better access when the weather's better so I can do a better anti-corrosion grease coating of the inside connectors, reconnect it, coat it outside with silicone, and then tie down the wiring to prevent any movement or chafing in the future...

Regards,
Ray
