FE intakes
Have been enjoying your site for awaile. I have bought a 4 bbl intake from a swap meet it's cast iron, and i bought it before i was really into the research of this engine. my question is, on the bottom of it there seems to be a sheet metal pan rivited to it. at this time it is dented, and apon closer inspection it might have a slite indentation that looks like a hole. one should this hole be ther and 2 can i drill the rivets out and fix this plate? I am a toolmaker by trade so metal work is my cup of tee, but i don't really know if i should remove this plate. I only payed 50.00 for the intake.(maybe this is why)
thanks for any help tom
That baffle has to be there to keep engine oil away from the exhaust crossover that is in the intake manifold. It's purpose is to keep oil from coming in contact with the hot underside of the intake. The rivets have a really coarse thread to them & if you wedge something under them to lift them a little then you can usually unscrew them with pliers. If you break one who cares, I always drill the holes to accept 1/4-20 bolts anyway just to make future cleanings easier. And the hole is there to allow any oil that does get in there a place to drain out, so make sure it is clear.
