A couple weeks ago I decided to try the "premium winterized fuel" at the local marathon station as it was getting perty cold here. I ran two tanks of it and and on the first one that was mixed with about 10 gallons of my regular shell fuel dropped my milage down by 2.5 mpg. The next tank that was pertty much all the new fuel dropped it down a full 3 mpgs! I switched back to the shell and after two fill ups I am back up to almost 16 mpg. That is my typical winter rate, summer is about 17-18. What would make this happen? I wouldn't think it would drop that much.
Ya but I didn't think it would drop it that much. I guess that means that the shell doesn't sell winterized fuel around here. I guess it don't really get that cold usually but we have been in a bit of a cold snap lately.
Yep if you are running # 1 it will drop it that much. the rest is probably a wenter blend'
I'm guesseng you noticed some drop in performance. In a 600 cat I lose 3 pounds boost between straight #2 and blended winter fuel but up north the blend is a little more radical. try running#2 and heep howes in it and you will be pleased.
also don't forget on top of this, when it's cold, you may have been letting idle longer.idle time= -mpg as your burning fuel and going 0 miles.
p.s. did you recalibrate your speed/odo when you switched tire sizes? this doesn't change the difference between your two tests results, but you may be off in actual mpg numbers.
also 12.5" wide tires are hard on fuel.the skinnier, the better in the snow and for mpg.tho big fat tires do look best, they cost much more to run.just fyi.
I know that my speedo is off by 5 mph and that for every 100 miles traveled it is off by 10.1 miles. It has been like this since I did the swap. I always let it sit and warm up for 15 minutes in the morning and the same in the afternoon after work so none of that changed. I guess I will stay away from that fuel lol. It rarely gets lower than the teens here and I have had no gelling problems.
