My first 4x4, 09 XLT and all is fine; we have been slammed in Des Moines this winter so I have had occasion to use the 4 WD and the only noticeable thing is at very slow and stopped speed, like in and out of drive or in a parking lot and the front wheels are turned considerably--lots of jerking, uh, uh, uh, and adjusting going on but the service manager at a dealer said it was normal and not a problem. Do they all do this?
If you make a tight turn in snow you will see that each of the four wheels leaves its own track, that is to say they each have their own turning radius--the front wheels make sharper turns than the rears (and require slightly fewer driveshaft revolutions). Your part-time transfer case spins both front and rear driveshafts at the same speed. Unless there is a differential between the front and rear driveshafts, the tires will have to slip on turns to compensate for the constant driving force and different turning radii. Not a problem unless you are on clean dry pavement.
My truck in 4 wheel was surprisingly smooth except for sharp turns, normal bucking. Coming out of a Dodge LWB, this short wheel base is like driving a sports car in the snow. And we had 24" last big storm, it was fun. Chris
