hey everyone. im looking at rebuilding/ building up my old 429 for shop class this semester, and i have a big question before i tear into things. i was looking at rebuild kits from northern auto, and the 429 kit is 600 bucks plus whatever goodies i want to add on. BUT the 460 kit for the same year range is only 400. i know i SHOULD go with the 429 kit- but knowing the 460 is the exact same motor with a longer stroke i want to save the money (and the 460 kits have more cam and other options).
so my question is, does anybody know a reason why i should spend the extra money on the 429 as opposed to the 460? is there some spec that is diffferent between the two that i dont know about, which makes the kits different? any input is appreciated.
I'd get a 460 crank. You are going to buy pistons anyways so go for the extra cubes. Make sure you know what crank you are getting. After '79 they went external balance. So you should find a older one. That way you won't need a weighted flywheel or flex plate and the front snout balancer.
well, i was thinking about it, and i remembered that with the different stroke the wrist pin is different between the 429/460 piston. but that shouldnt be a 200 dollar difference, and the 460 has WAY more upgrade options for the rebuild kit, so who knows...
their are a lot more 460's out their than 429's. maybe the cost of the piston because of the volume of pistons being made. Also the 429 check and see if its cast or forged piston or hyperutectic. i would go with the 460 over 429 if possible. Both good engines but after running both the cubic inches is the way to go. Good luck on either.
