?? Horn / Blinker problem ??

Hi, My issue lies with the horn and the blinkers. The horn button does not depress in any way. it is like it is stuck in the down postion. I am a bit confused on ordering up the parts. I am not sure what to order. The turn signals work however, I have to phsically turm the turn signals off after I complete the turn.
While I have your attention.... the emergency flasher only works when the turn signal is in the left turn mode is on.
This maybe by design but thought I would ask. Thanks in advance!

usually in the older models the blinkers don't turn off by themselves...so it may not be in the design and as far as the horn goes that happened in my dad's 76 so he just got a seperate button and strapped it to the steering column!

not true! they DO turn off by them selfs when working properly. sounds like you need a new turn signal switch. not sure what could be wrong with the horn..... push down and turn the horn ring to the left to get it off.

I agree with Bill, You need a new canceling cam. It is a plastic part that fits to the switch itself.

Sounds like someone has been in the top of the column already. There should be a large spring under the button holding it up, that sounds like it is missing.

If the gap between the column and wheel is more than 1/16th inch the horn will not work and the turn signals will not be reset by the canceling cam. Check this first before going and spending money. As the cab sags the gap gets bigger. Adjusting the gap is fairly easy.

The horn button has a spring under it . Sounds like yours is missing. Push the button down and turn to release it.

Sounds like one, or both of the arms on the turn signal switch has broken off, it's not likely, but possible the steering wheel was installed incorrectly, there's a trip arm on the steering wheel assembly that needs to be in correct position for signal to work.

With regards to the horn, recently tracked down the horn, and turn signal gremlins on my 65. Suggest start by adding items to your shopping list for reconditioning the horn assembly, does not cost much; couple horn contact brushes, contact brush insulator, and the plastic horn button/ring retainer. If the horn button does not depress wonder if the spring has been removed, or possibly the incorrect spring, believe there's a difference between the horn button and horn ring spring. Also, there's the plastic horn retainer, there's room for slight adjustment by tightening, or loosening combination of the 3 screws.

May want to start by first determine if horn is working, disconnect wire at the horn and using alligator clip, or piece of wire, connect one end to the connector on the horn and the other to the pos. side of batt., should get a blast. Next, can either check circuit at the horn relay which has 3 prongs, one from the batt. side of the start relay, another going to the horn, and the third from the steering column. Thus, push horn button completes circuit between the batt. and the horn. Not that knowledgeable with automotive electrical circuits but it would seem possible to jump a wire from batt side of horn relay to the horn on the 3 prong connector and should get a blast. I started by removing the horn ring making sure to use caution because there's a flimsy contact brush that rest against the horn ring and breaks easily. Check for voltage between contact brush and steering wheel shaft. If no voltage then steering wheel needs to be removed using a 'steering wheel puller'. There are 2 threaded bolt holes to screw the bolts into for the puller to attach to. Again, use caution because there's another flimsy brush that rest inside a housing on the turn signal switch. Should be able to get voltage between the brush and steering column shaft. Finally, during reassembly, take steel wool, or fine sandpaper and clean all surfaces the brushes come in contact with. Wipe the surfaces; lastly, if decide to replace the turn signal switch it's not necessary to cut the wires, the pins can be removed from the connector very easily. Anyhow, rambled on enough.

I am horrible when it comes to keeping track of paper work and started bookmarking threads of intersted, including threads, or post by member whether it be pic's of projects I may be considering in future, or referral sources. Same with articles from magazine, catalogs, etc. Must have bookmarked, or 'cut and pasted' majority of Bill's/NumbersDummy threads for future references, talk about some valuable info. Anyhow, food for thought.

The spring used with the horn button is NOT the same as the spring used with the horn ring.

CODF13A807B .. Horn Button Spring / Obsolete (Note: CODZ13A807B is used with the horn ring)

Fits; 1961/65 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F100 4WD / 1966 F250 2WD / 1967/70 F100/350 / 1960/63 Falcon/Comet.

PARTS INTERNATIONAL in Farmers Branch TX has 3 = 888-727-0418.

JST AUTOMOTIVE in Lebanon TN has 4 = 615-443-3086.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 5 = 800-543-4959.
--------------------------------------------------------
When the horn ring or button is removed, there is a hole on the outside of steering wheel where the horn brush and insulator fit into.

People are (usually) unaware of this, remove the steering wheel, then these parts fall out. Guess what happens when they re-install the steering wheel. The horn doesn't work.

The brush has a thin copper wire inside it...it can snap in two pieces.

C2OZ13A821A .. Horn Brush & Insulator Kit / Obsolete

BOYER FORD TRUCKS in Minneapolis MN has 1 = 800-999-4327.

HERMAN MOTOR CO. in Luverne MN has 4 = 507-283-4427.

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS in Liberty KY has 24 = 606-787-5293.

PARTS INTERNATIONAL has 50.

GREEN SALES CO. has 173.
---------------------------
On the backside of the steering wheel is the C shaped steel canceling cam (Dave sez: trip arm ) used for the turn signal switch.

IF the plastic cam on the switch itself is broken, the canceling cam will not cancel the turn signals.

You can buy the plastic cam by itself from an autoparts store, but it can be b!tch to replace.

C9TZ13341C .. Turn Signal Switch / A few are still available from Ford.

MSRP: $61.98 // FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $44.63.

Fits: 1965/66 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F100 4WD / 1967/68 F100/350 / 1969 F100/350 before serial number G30,001.

Uh huh...Which older models might those be?

ALL 1953 and later trucks have self canceling turn signals, except for the dealer installed (or aftermarket) TSS's used on 1953/60's.

NumberDummy ~ Thanks for giving me part numbers! My thanks goes to you!
BOYER FORD TRUCKS is 20 minutes away from me. Maybe you can anwser this.
My truck is a 65 Ford F250. It is a st tyake body / Flat bed. My thinking here is that it was a Goverment truck of some sort. Would the VIN number point to that in ome way?
It does not have a radio place in the dash, and the engine bay is an ugly orange color.

No.

Look on the Warranty Plate for the DSO code, post what it is.

The radio was an extra cost option on all these trucks, Standard & Custom Cabs, even on Rangers.

So...if the truck doesn't have one, that doesn't mean it was a state or Gov't vehicle.

Ugly orange color: What Cal-Trans (CA Dept. of Transportation) trucks are painted.
