I have a question about a piece on a motorcraft 2bbl carb. On the drivers side of the carb there is a small electrical device. What it is, I dont know. Anyway it has a wire coming out of it and it leads to nothing. It looks as if the wire was attached to somthing at one time but I have no idea where it goes. Does anybody have any idea what this does or where the wire goes? Any help is appreciated.
The piece you refer to can have two functions as far as I know anyway.
First it can be used to prevent run-on when you shut off the engine. It denegerizes when you turn off the key and allows the throttle plate to fully close thus cutting off the air to the engine.
Second it can be used to increase the idle RPM when you have air conditioning. When you turn on the a/c this solenoid energizes and bumps up the idle rpm so the a/c load doesnt stall the engine.
Of course it depends on what electrical circuit you connect it to.
There is a throttle stop solenoid that sits on the driver's side. When the AC is turned on a little projection on the solenoid extends and slightly increases the idle speed by moving the throttle lever just a bit. It should be a small cylinder sitting horizontally on the forward part of the carb. There is a small bolt that you turn that moves then solenoid in and out to set the idle speed. I am actually not completely sure where it hooks into the wiring harness because the AC compressor on my Ranchero was taken off.
This is just a guess. Let us know what you find out.
