83 f250 w/ 460. ok so me and my buddy were workin on my truck that hasnt ran in bout a year. i had to leave for work so i left him to replace the distributor. i get a phone call on the way there with him tellin me while he had the old dis. out he dropped a bolt down the hole. now the engine wont even turn. any idea where it could have fell down to so i dont have to tear the whole thing apart?
you could try a magnet.most likely the bolt is stuck in the dist gear.try backing the engine a little and use a magnet to try to get the bolt out.if not you might have to take the timing cover off .
When you say the engine wont turn over does the engine not move at all, or the engine rotates. That happened to me once and all I did was change the starter switch on the fenderwell, and check your battery voltage.

If you read the thread, you'll find that somebody dropped a bolt down the hole in
the engine where the distributor goes, which means it's jamming the
camshaft/distributor gear and timing chain. Replacing a starter solenoid won't fix
THAT.
yeah i tried a magnet but didnt get nothin. but thanks for the info ill take the cover off and see what i find. and i wont punch him lol but will make him do the work to get it out
try rotating the eng backwards with a socket on the crank pulley, that should dislodge the bolt and maybe you can find it with the magnet. Its almost gotta be jammed between the block and the cam at the dist drive
Unless they have changed since the last time I looked you can't get to the dist gear by just removing the timing cover. I would try a long time with a good magnet before I started tearing it down. Like it was said you will have to turn the engine backwards just a hair before a magnet will be able to pick it up.
