you could try a magnet.most likely the bolt is stuck in the dist gear.try backing the engine a little and use a magnet to try to get the bolt out.if not you might have to take the timing cover off .

engine wont turn

When you say the engine wont turn over does the engine not move at all, or the engine rotates. That happened to me once and all I did was change the starter switch on the fenderwell, and check your battery voltage.

If you read the thread, you'll find that somebody dropped a bolt down the hole in
the engine where the distributor goes, which means it's jamming the
camshaft/distributor gear and timing chain. Replacing a starter solenoid won't fix
THAT.

try rotating the eng backwards with a socket on the crank pulley, that should dislodge the bolt and maybe you can find it with the magnet. Its almost gotta be jammed between the block and the cam at the dist drive

Your buddy drops the bolt down the hole and then turns the motor over anyway? Wow.

I truly feel for you.

Did you try turning the engine with a wrench or the starter? If your buddy used the starter stuff might be pretty tore up.

Unless they have changed since the last time I looked you can't get to the dist gear by just removing the timing cover. I would try a long time with a good magnet before I started tearing it down. Like it was said you will have to turn the engine backwards just a hair before a magnet will be able to pick it up.

I agree. Punch your buddy, take his truck, pillage his girlfriend.

Otherwise, get in there with as much light as you can get into there, back it off A HAIR, and fiddle with a magnet or mechanical fingers.

There might already be damage done. Did he sink in the distributor with the bolt in there? Why is he turning the engine over anyway?
