Yeah I know what you are thinking, Loose screw behind the wheel. Well while that may be true there is yet another issue here.
For quite a while now and especially when it is very cold I had a small squeak behind the steering wheel. Nothing major just sounded like a small contact rubbing on the contacts. Well now it sounds like that contact is gone and a small spring is rubbing now.
I removed the horn cover and the bolt that holds the wheel on but there are no holes to screw a wheel puller in there.
I am thinking there is a very slim chance that I have a problem with the multi-function switch but I doubt that is my issue.
Does anybody have a diagram of the column and assembly I can look at? Jim?
Also what type of puller does it take to remove the wheel? There are no threaded holes to use a typical puller on.
yea, you gotta use the knee and hands method, and maybe have somebody tap the spline with the nut on it while you apply pressure to the 3 points.
you can see how it works on my steering wheel install on my web sight.
3 prongs, but they shoudlnt' squeek, there is a boat load of grease on them.
I'd send you a new clip, but i dont have it, but if you want a pullable steering wheel, i'll hook you up when i come down.
i ended up replacing the whole colume because it had bad bearings (it moved like an airplane yoke) i dont see why you cant get a kit or if it is replaceable with a clock spring.
the newer SRS style system which is a clock spring style has 5 pins not three.
The unit is also too big to fit into the older columns. I thought about putting it in, and decided to not try and gut the column.
I then thought about putting my old colum in from my 95 and noticed they are different enough in the wiring systems that I didn't want to mess with it.
I'm sure there is a kit from ford that will be new springs and tips.
Hey neal, was your steering stiff as well? I've got a '97 f-250 hd 4x4 and the steering would get stiff then loosen up and go back n forth and periodically i'd get a squeak noise behind the steering wheel. now the squeak won't go away. I've had the pump replaced and the fluids flushed and still havin the problems. Does this sound familiar or am i just having multiple problems lol?
