E4OD question

Hey,
I have a 94 F-150 with the 5.8L and the E4OD. I just recently pulled out the tranny to get it rebuilt and upgraded so I get it back and put it in fill it with fluid and take it out for a test drive. The 1-2 shift is extremely harsh and when it warms up it has way to much fluid in it which I thought was kinda weird. So I drained a little out and then it had the right amount and the shifting was a little better so I let it sit overnight and got in it the next morning and the darn thing was slipping really bad so I checked the fluid and it was a quart low so I added fluid in it to bring it back up to full and drove it around and got it warm and same thing as the day before once I rechecked the fluid it was way to much so I let it sit again over night and started it and the fluid was where it was supposed to be until it warmed up and then it was way over the hash marks. So do I have to let it sit and warm up every morning I didn't used to have to do this and if I do, that would be kinda of ridiculous. The shop I had rebuild it doesn't have a clue and I have looked and searched for this particular problem but came up with nothing. So I was wondering if anybody had any symptoms like this and yes I know that you are supposed to check it hot on a flat level surface and in park or neutral but if I put the fluid at the correct level when it is hot it slips really bad when it is cold and that can not be right. So any ideas? Any adjustments on this transmission that can be done? I did check the oil cooler lines to make sure they were free and not plugged and it has an external oil cooler as well as the one in the radiator so I am kinda of stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well I'd tell them they better get one .. you paid them, but it doesn't sound like they did their job .. did the re-build come with any kind of warranty?

tell them that it is not working correctly, and that if they can't correct the problem you want your money back as you don't think they're capable of doing the job right ..

if they won't budge .. file a small claims court action against them and see if that gets you any better service .. and start keeping a log of the problems you're having and the time/date and person you spoke with when you contact them .. contact another shop and have them look at it and get an estimate to have it repaired and confirm that it is not working correctly (maybe they can tell if it has indeed been re-built) .. these will go a long way in getting a judgment against them ..

sorry I can't help with the actual issue .. I only own standards ..

They told me to bring it down but It is acting so funky I don't want to damage any parts and they won't pay for a tow so I thought if I did a little research and had some better information I would be able to deal with problem better.

Good advice from pete. Not an expert but it sounds to me that either the trans filter has dropped down or if the truck is a 4x4 they have used a 4x2 trans filter.

Yes it is a 4x4 good suggestion I will inquire on that I did not know there was a difference. Could the type of fluid be a problem also? I used NAPA brand mercon which I have never had a problem with but anything is possible I guess.

That fluid should be OK. An empty E4OD and empty torque converter should have taken around 16qts of fluid.
The 4x4 filter has a longer neck to fit the deeper pan so a 4x2 filter may not sit far enough into the fluid. Also the filter is held on by a clip so if not properly installed it can fall down and so the pump can`t get enough fluid.

I am going to drop the pan tonight and see if that filter they put in is correct or if it dropped. I will also check the codes to see if there are any present because after doing a little more searching it sounds like it is in limp mode and I did not notice if the od light was blinking when it was shifting hard. What a pain.
