Rough start
Hi all,
I just bought an 05 SD with the 6.0. The KR is in excellent condition and runs great on the road, however on the first star of the day it runs rough. Sounds like its not running on all cylinders and I get some white smoke from the exhust. This clears up after a few seconds (30) and then runs great the rest of the day.
Have 111,000 miles and checking with Ford truck has never had any engine work accomplished and all services have been completed on time.
Any ideas???

We are down in the low 30's. I do not plug the heater in because the cord is not installed. Ford dealer said it is nothing to worry about and it might just need the PCM updated.

My own truck would miss a little at temps around 30°F or lower. I changed my oil to a 5W/40 synthetic diesel oil and it cured that. It is amazing the difference that the oil makes. The reason is because the engine oil is used to actuate the injectors, and the cold 15W oil is too heavy. I'll bet if you change your oil you will be astonished at the difference.
The white smoke you are seeing is probably just unburnt fuel caused by the slow injector spools.
I agree you don't need to plug in for those moderate temps.

Thanks for all the help. It does have 15-50 or 40 Rotella T in it. That is prbable the problem. As i said aftyer about 20/30 seconds it idles and runs great.

I used to not plug my 7.3 in because there was a short in the plug, and it did the same thing you are talking about, it would misfire a little bit, but when I started plugging it in again, I saw a HUGE improvement and it hasn't done that since.
I even plug it in when the temps are in the 30's because it starts easier and warms up faster.
I would highly recommend getting the plug fixed

My 6.0 has some rough mornings when its in the 20s and 30s, usually I run the glow plugs for a good minute, that seems to help out a lot. I also use a grille cover because the speed limits on my 10 mile commute never get over 40, and I want to make sure it gets warmed up.

Trust me, you wont regret it a bit. Makes things so much easier all around. Easier starts, faster warm ups, longer injector life, etc.

It certainly won't hurt to plug it in anyway, but you will want to get an appliance timer. If you leave it plugged in all night, in only 30°F temps, you'll be wasting electrical $$$ like crazy.

Rotella T 15W/40 is in a white bottle, about $11/gallon.
Rotella T 5W/40 Syn is in a blue bottle, about $18/gallon.
Those are Wal*Mart prices.
