Newbie questions

I've got an 03 F-250 6.0 liter-auto 4x4 with 130000ish miles on it, Banks 6 gun tuner, Banks exhaust, guages (pyro, boost), and Air Raid intake. I bought the truck last summer as it was a good price since the previous owner dropped a 5th wheel on the bed and dented it. I didn't do as much research on the truck as I should have and now have questions, I'm starting to kick myself for the purchase and now I stuck with it. 1st question, what is bad about the Banks tuner so I know what to look for in the future. 2nd, truck has intermittently surged at idle since I bought it, nothing serious 100-300 rpms P-N-or D when warm. 3rd, now at cold start (not extreme, nw oregon) blue smoke good miss rough idle for 10-30 sec. I haven't noticed any coolant leak from the bottle, EGR is unpluggled, recent oil change with fresh fuel filters. Haven't noticed any decrease in fuel milage, higher egts, or fluctuating boost. Scared I have a ticking time bomb on my hands.

From what I know the generic tuners such as the Banks you have do not actually reprogram the transmission which causes problems. Others can provide much greater detail.

Also with any tuner that adds HP there is the potential for stretched head bolts which results in blown gaskets unless you have upgraded to studs.

Also I would get rid of the Air Raid intake and replace it with the stock Donaldson filter. It is commonly stated that this filter is good for up to 500 HP and is a far superior filter.

The following info comes from a Ford data sheet on filters:

* Stops 99.99% of contaminants one micron or larger (human hair is approximately 74 microns) and hold over 3 pounds before needing replacement

* Manufactured by Donaldson, using their patented PowerCore design. Contains twice the amount of filter media versus conventional pleated filters.

*Same filter technology as used in the M1 Abrams tank!

Thanks for the info, since I bought the truck I've heard nothing good about the Banks tuner but wasn't sure what the problem was. I will defininatly look into changing to the donaldson filter.

In addition to what Cowboy65 said, when was the last time your truck had a "flash" ? Might try making an appt with your local Ford dealer to get the latest, might still be TSB 09-24-3. This will help with cold running/start issues and smoking. There might be a newer flash at this point, but for around $100 it is a good place to start (after you remove the Banks 6-Gun) I'll see if I can find the thread that tells you what the flash updates.

Did they use OEM filters? If not get them out of there!

the surge is most likly related to the turbocharger sticking or vgt silinoid, I would lean more towards the vgt then the tubo.
the rest has been awnsered already. try the new flash

Thanks for the help, from what I have read on the forum previously, I use only Ford fuel and oil filters when I change oil. I hope to get it down to the dealer in the next week and make sure it has the most recent flash and run a diagnostic test on it. I have also read something about an OASIS report? What is this, from what I guessing it is a report about what has been performed on the engine, would I need to request this at the Ford dealer? PS anyone in the market for a Banks six gun tuner?

OASIS is an acronym for Online Automotive Service Information System which accesses Ford's databases to give access to vehicle information for up to 10 years (recalls will remain open until they are completed). Your local dealer can provide a copy of this reports which will contain lots of good info about what has been done to your truck.

Might also check to see if and when the coolant was changed the first time. At 130,000 you should be due at 145,000 per Ford. DieselSite Coolant bypass filter is a good PM mod.
Remember the MIN level mark on the degass bottle is actually the NEW MAX/FULL mark.
PM Bismic and have him send you the 6.0L spreadsheets.

CCV Re-route is also a great idea since your past 100k!
