Brake Lines

About half the inverted flare fittings I made for my brake system are leaking. I find this very frustrating; I thought I had done a good job making the inverted double flare ends for the brake lines, I followed the instructions too the letter that came with the flaring tool. Any ideas what my problem might be? I've got "synthetic" brake fluid all over the truck and the garage floor what a mess! By the way it does soften paint at least krylon even if it has "set" for a year...

The length is critical that sticks out of the tubing holder. The length should be exactly the height of the shoulder on the adapter that fits over the tubing for the first flare. I found that deburring the tubing after a cut is not needed. I use a Snap-On tool and have not had any problem. The DOT-5 fluid should not make any difference. You may want to put a little brake fluid on the point of the flaring tool for a lubricant... it won't hurt but keep the dirt off.

Examine your flare and notice if the seam in the tubing is causing an elevated spot that will not seal against the tapered conical seal in the cylinder.Although most of the seam is smashed flat during the process,if the tubing grade is very hard,a hand held tool will not smash it flat like an automated tool.If the seam is your problem, you could possibly debur them with a Dremmel and a small cone shaped rotary file or stone.Of coarse, you will have to flush the lines free of the shavings after grinding.
