You want more cubes period. Go with the 460 and don't look back.

The 460 will give you more torque and there are more aftermarket components for it as well. As far as gas milage, they are both big blocks, so if gas milage is a priority, you need to be looking at a different engine.

Just my .02

429 is the same as the 460 except for a shorter stroke.
429 faster revving car motor
460 more torque truck motor

I had a 429 in my 79 bronco it was a beast. But gas hit 2 bucks a gallon and the 8 mpg on a good day was the end of that truck.

The 429 and 460 are the same engine, the 460 just has a longer stroke. 429's were built earlier so there is a better chance of having earlier heads(pre-72) that flow better, But a 460 won't disappoint and the heads interchange anyway. The Mileage will probably not even be noticeable, so you might as well have 30 extra cubes.

Its no different than asking is it better to have a 351M or a 400.
A 429 is a destroked 460

You are not going to gain noticable better mileage with the smaller motor just less hp and torque.

429 and 460 both started at the same time (1968), one isn't older than the other.

There aren't more aftermarket parts for the 460, the parts are interchangeable other than the rotating assembley. So aftermarket heads or intake or distributor or headers etc will also fit the 429.

Either is a great engine. If you come across a great deal on a 429 then go with it, thats what my dad did.

If you have the ability to choose then go with the 460, it's pretty much a 429 with a free stroker kit. Who wouldn't want a free stroker kit.

And you wouldn't be able to feel the HP difference between either motor in an F-series truck anyhow.

70 429 with D0VE heads all tricked out and I get about 5.5-6 MPG in my 250.

i have a 1977 step side 4wd f 250 with a 460 an d 350 transfer case that i want to sell. i bought this truck new with a 351 M and it had no power and got about 8 mpg,,,,i did the 460 and it jumped to 14-15 mpg on the hi way.,,,,,there is one thing u must do before instaling a 1971 and up 460,,,,change out the timing gear nand chain to the early one. they retarded the cam in 71 an it costs quite a bit of power. dont believe the haed thing,,,those things have such large ports that theye would work for 600 cubes. they were suposed to be used by nascar. if u grind of the exhaust valve bloob it is good for about 30 hp or maore.,,,the 460 in my 77 is a total rebuild and has never been driven, it has a 4 inch core radiater. anyone interested in buying it,,,e mail me,,,fjprovanjr@aol.com,,,,it is an 8 ft bed. and is in fairly nice original shap but does need to be restored.
