How many of you that have the OBS powerstrokes that are not running nowhere near as good as it is supposed to. And don't even realize it!
I keep reading about people installing chips and not getting what they expect and all kinds of other problems that can be cured just by getting the thing back in factory specs again. I put my slide in back on the truck the other day, that get's me to 11,000 pounds. And hooked my 16,000 pound horse trailer to it just to go see what it would do now and I was amazed at the difference. I did discover a minor brake problem that I had to fix but it was running like new and stronger than ever. All I have done is bring everything back to factory spec and service it where it had been neglected, modified and hacked by idiots over the years.
These darn trucks really have a pair when they just run right. They don't even need the performance mods most of you are doing.
The only mods I have still in place are the 6637 type air filter and a 3-4 downpipe and 4 inch exhaust. I outran a new duramax up a mountain the other day and he was just pulling an empty stock trailer. I know he was trying to keep ahead of me because he flipped me off as I went on by. I was nice and just smiled and I didn't even smoke him out. I was just on the cruise doing 65 and still in 5th gear.
I think these trucks will do more than any of you would ever need if you just concentrate on making them run as they were intended to and only stick with the really necessary mods like air and exhaust. I think chips in most cases are a solution looking for a problem. Just my 2 cents worth.
My truck did have a lot of ***** at stock with bad springs in the injectors. I was quite impressed with it.
Most of us here who are really serious are not looking for coverups though, we are looking for some serious TLC for our trucks.
We want it to be in line, so when we do turn on the chip, it goes. =)
But yea, most people buy a chip to fix things that could be leaky o-rings, bad injectors, bad sensors.
Cause its gone "sluggish" or just doesn't perform the way it used too.
I want powerful. I would get a gasser if I didn't, but my biggest reason for owing a diesel is reliability and durability. If I hop in it tomorrow and load up the camper and head for the mountains in Alaska I want to be sure it will get me there and back, no problem. I am almost at the point with the 94 where I would feel comfortable doing that. All the aftermarket stuff can be a major pain if it breaks down out in the middle of nowhere. Try getting a non standard fuel filter or a non standard clutch in Barstow california, or Nome, Alaska. That's where I'm driving it to next year. I'm carrying an extra clutch disc and pressure plate with me and a bunch of other common spare parts just in case but I am a lot more comfortable knowing that it is almost all stock. It's got plenty of power for the mountains just like it is.
Wow, not many stock OBS trucks can haul a slide in camper, and a horse trailer, grossing 27K, and blow past a Duramax, uphill, on cruise, at 65mph, in 5th. That rig you've got is definately one in a million.
I get 16-22 mpg empty too. Depends on the wind around here a lot. I get a flat 12 mpg with that whole rig, no matter what the wind is. That's pretty darn good I think.
I've really searched hard over the last week for any more aftermarket stuff on it, since I discovered the chip in the PCM, and I can't find anything else. It's just running right. It flat out scares me when I mash it to pass a big truck on the highway now too. at 65 my rpm is just right to hit max boost almost instantly and boy will it fly now. That exhaust and clutch made a HUGE difference in the boost. So did regluing the intake plenums on it. That picked up 10 psi just doing that. They were in bad shape. Now I get about 20-22 psi when I really get after it. There was a day when getting 5 psi was a feat.
I'm not much into green stuff but these are claimed to be one of the best for fuel savings and the traction and mileage on them doesn't look too bad either. I'm throwing my mounted mudders on the back when I head to Alaska too. I'm not entirely off my rocker.
I sold my little jeep a couple years ago because the wind here gets so bad sometimes I couldn't get it over 40 mph on the highway. 60 mph winds are nothing here in the winter. The slide in gets a little white knucklish in high winds sometimes. Or at least used to. I got all the play out of the steering wheel and have been swapping out the sway bar busings with new ones and that really helps a lot. Poly bushings would probably help even more but the ride would get a little harsh then. I might do air bags too. Not sure yet. It's got factory overloads and nothing sets it down below level with those.

wanna go for a ride yet??? you think a stock truck "scares" you when you mash it? i had my truck running great when it was stock and thought it was a bad mo fo too. now if i drive a stock truck it sucks no matter which way you look at it. drove a great running stock cummins, sucked.. stock OBS psd running good, it sucked(my truck without tunes w/ stage 1's). i will never own another stock diesel. they will still pull, but the comparison to a tuned or a truck with modded injectors is just huge and i can't stand to drive a stock one anymore. haha. if you feel like meeting me in mineral wells in a few weeks let me know. i will meet you and take you for a ride in my truck to show you the difference. you will be very surprised i think.. haha. oh yeah and with this new IH cam sensor i get 22mpg.. haha
It blows a very small amount of black smoke when I'm on it and the turbo is wound up. I barely notice it at all.
I have to go down to mineral wells quite a bit. I am going down a bunch hog hunting over the next few weeks with my camper so we could meet up. That would be fun.

I agree with Travis 110%. A stock truck sucks! I can't even believe I'm reading this thread without more disagreement. I also don't for a minute think that the mods most of us do is hurting our trucks. Timing is everything and as I modded my truck bigger challenges were facing me in life. I'm referring to moving. I moved a 24K 42' enclosed trailer from Nebraska to AZ twice and I would have never made it without the mods to my truck. The big 5th wheel I bought was my doing but I would have a lot of trouble pulling it without the mods. Its all in the way you think, more mods, more attention to details of maintenance. My truck is running so good that if I had to do it all over again, I would do exactly what I've done. Heck, you only live once, I say go for it. I gave my brother-in-law a ride in my truck and this guy is not impressed about anything. When he got out of the pickup he said that for a 'old' truck he was really impressed!!

my brother drives a modded 24v cummins and he is impressed with my truck. does that say anything when a cummins owner is impressed??? LoL
