ok I know I'm probably doing this *** backwards, but I just got a garret 38b ball bearing turbo and up-pipes my buddy is upgradeing after granading his 03 powerstroke .I have his dp tuner chip ,the turbo and pipes.and getting a 4" exhaust for my E-350 van .thre trans is rebuilt new u-joints.rebuilt rear, duellys. I am doing the rear fuel crossover but not going bigger on the injectors ,this is my work truck and need more grunt cus' I'm always over weight and running up hill (it seems) what should I look for or at as preventive work so I don't blow this apart?
his chip wont work because he has split shot injectors and you have single shots, you will have to get it reburned also the turbo wont work without modification because the pedestals are different and i dont think its as simple as putting a new style pedestal in. i may be wrong though. also with a bigger turbo and chip you will need guages because your egts will be pretty high while towing especially since our trucks dont have intercoolers and his did
That and you wont be able to use it with or without the IC without a lot of work because the intake plenums on the gen 1 PSD had 2 1/2" openings where the gen 2 (late99+) had 3" because of the IC thats why we use the spyder from an early 99 to install an IC (early 99 still had the smaller intake plenums). The spyders for the later turbos also had a different size outlet of the turbo to the spyder so your wont fit it. And while you can get intake plenums with the larger openings the spyder is still setup for an IC, which you dont have, but I suppose you could make tubing to connet from the spyder back to itself in place of the IC.
it is getting reburned at the 40 and 80 hp tow levels and econo and high idle ,and this is what I need to know befor tearing it apart for a weekend swapover, thanks guy's .I can get his pedistal to mount on mine ,he has an F250 .I have the E-350so I figgered ther might be things to look for,I have looked for gauges and trying to get something to mount on the dash-top.but it seems my truck is too old ,and no one seems to know what will work with out opening a package and sitting in the truck.mostly kid's at the custom shops with NO imaganation or drive to find out what will work ..and I just don't have the big bucks to throw away on some one mistakes...I don't see anyway of getting an intercooler in my van there is just no room...
you will need some custom piping to use that turbo, and like others have said i doubt that you will get the full use of it. that is a larger turbo and with our small injectors you will have a major lag on the low end-not enough fuel to spool it quickly. i think you would be better off just trying the chip and exhaust first and see how you like it. the turbo will be alot of work for alot of turbo lag. the chip and exhaust will make a huge difference in towing performance. id try that first befopre you go tearing the turbo out. the stock one will spool much faster
thing's you only get from experiance. thanks for the advice ,the chip is being reburned ,the exhaust is next ,the turbo is back in the box till later.thank's guys...how far can I go with the stock turbo and replaceing the injectors? the 96 truck hauls great compared to my 93 cube van .I just want a litte more...is this a power addiction...is it a bad thing??
