180000 miles alot for 7.3ltr Powerstroke.

Hi All,

Im in the process of looking to buy a 7.3 Ltr turbo diesel F250 over here in Australia and was wondering what things to look for ( It is an Australian 2005 model...but I think it's like a 2003 US model ).

Also what are the engines like and is 180000 miles alot for one of these engines.

Or should I look at the 4.2 Ltr turbo diesels or are these not a good option....I only ask this as they are alot cheaper....which normally isnt a good sign.

And what is an approximate fuel milage I should expect....it will be mostly highway and NO Towing.

Look forward to any feedback.

Thanks in adavnce Rory Algate.

I have a 2001 7.3 with 190K miles on it and it still runs like a top. I have all the service records for it and nothing major has ever been fixed motor wise. If the transmission is original then that would be concern for me on a truck with 180k miles. Mine was replaced at 110K. So overall 180K is not that many miles for a 7.3. Some say that its just broken in
As far as mileage goes, I see about 14-18mpg, depending on how much highway use I had that tank. Its mostly just city driving and the occasional smoking of a Hemi here and there

Mine's got 277k on it and runs like brand new. I didn't even think twice about buying it with such high miles.

I see around 21-22 miles a gallon if it's all highway (i keep it under 2000 rpm, cruise around 67), and around 17 around town. A little less if I get all over it.

I have a manual transmission and 2wd, though- so that helps.

I would say that it depends on how much they want for it. I paid $9800 for mine with that many miles. It now has 228,000 and has had a few repairs that I would consider normal for that many miles (U-joints, brakes, water pump, belt tensioner, etc.). I think it has been a good deal.

What they said. I have 230K on my 99 and it still runs great. Only repairs so faqr is what would be expected... UVCH, replace alternator...batteries, Brakes.

Taken care of there are alot of people claimgin 500K plus.

And I average about 18-20 everyday driving in Factory mode. With the chip and the extra power, IF I behave, I can get about 23mpg.

MATE YOU WOULD DIE WHAT WE PAY HERE FOR THEM.....the one Im looking at here is $55000 AUD which is about $48000 USD....they are so rediculously priced here...a 2009 F250 fully imported will set you back $145000 AUD or $135000 USD....I wish I lived over there!!!!

Tell me about it....I was thinking about buying a new one leaving it with my uncle's mates in Canada and importing it 12 mths later as that way you can avoid alot of the import and luxury car tax's.

There is a big market for them.....new from Ford Australia you were looking at $79000 ( Mexican version too not the US one's) but since they stopped importing them in 2007 they have actually increased in price a 2007 model ( 2005 US Model ) with less than 60000 miles will go for near on $90,000 AUD ( $75000 USD )....it is so obsurd but I just love Effies so you have to what you have to do.

Wow. I am afraid I would buy something else. No way would I pay that much money for a vehicle.

Hell, seems you could order the parts to rebuild a blown up 7.3 for less than that!?!?

Yeah its pretty expensive....but most cars are like that Toyota Landcruisers and the like are all hight to mid $40000 for the same type of miles and age....Mustangs here go for well over a $125000. It is all out of control...Australia is one of the highest tax nations in the Western world.
