I've been doing some looking and read on the 6.4's.I like what I see and the price are not to bad on used ones.I know they pull good from what I have read.
Question is,what is the norm as for as problems go?
How do they run with aftermarket go parts?tDo they run a little better or like a raped ape?
From what I have read from a couple of the techs, I will stick with the 6.0. They claim, I am a messenger, that the 6.4 is much more difficult to work on and that equals money and they have their own quirks just as the 6.0 does. I really hope the 6.7 proves beter than either but am not sure yet. Please don't flame, this is an open forum for discussion purposes.
I never had a 6.0 but from what I have read on FTE, the 6.4 is similar in that you have to pay attention to the coolant and EGR system.
6.4 can have radiator leaks, manufacture defect
EGR system can be problematic if the engine is not used like it should be
Spartan tuned 6.4's are said to run like scalded dogs. The motor is very powerful, even in stock trim. The delivery of the power is a little strange feeling but it's there.
Banks 6-gun tuned 6.4's run strong but not talked about as much.
The Spartan Diesel Technologies personnel make strong statements about the motor. They say it is VERY powerful, very well designed. I tend to believe them.
MPG to me is not bad as I just came from a 07 5.4l. When the winter blend came into effect in November, my MPG went to less than 10mpg on the Gas motor. I traded to an 08 6.4l at Christmas time. Just did a 1345 mile trip. I have the factory tank of 30 gallons which was full, but I also have a 140 gal auxiliary tank. I filled the auxiliary to a specific point on the tank (sight glass) and drove to KC Missouri, dropped off the wife and drove straight back (medical emergency with mom), the engine was never turned off, not even to fuel. I drove 1345 miles exactly (round trip) and used 77 gallons of fuel as I filled as soon as I got back to Waco, TX. That computs by hand to 17.467 mpg. I was impresss as the idiot guage that shows the mpg was at 17.7. I keep a pretty constant speed of 73 and the RPM's showed right at 2000.
Drive to and from work, 32 miles round trip, the average is 13-15 depending on how much traffic has slowed on I-35. All in all, it is hands down better than the 5.4 and rides so much better. Regens on the hiway were every 200 miles, almost like clockwork. Daily driving, regens are evey 150 again like clockwork.

what rear axle ratio do u have? on the door post sticker
mine is 4.10 and I'm around 12.5 everyday. 30 miles to anywhere from here.
I can only give you our experience with our 08 F-350 6.4L. Completely stock and will remain so. It has plenty of everything we need to tow our 14K plus 5th wheel all over the country. Over 28K miles with not a single problem of any kind. About 95% of that is towing the 5th wheel. That is the trucks primary duty. We run 62/65 MPH towing and average 10/11 mpg depending on conditions. Solo on the average interstate we do 15/17 mpg. The faster you go the worse the MPG gets. Stop and go city driving, solo 12/13mpg. The truck weighs 9250lbs ready to tow. Regeneration is not a big issue. We do have a external gage to monitor all parameters. We can see the regen take place and how long it last. Normally the only way we know it is in regen is the higher EGT temps. There is little if any difference in performance, towing or not towing. Maint has not been unusual, Ford does all the maint(5K miles intervals) and the cost has been less than I expected on a Diesel. This has been a strong truck. If you use it properly and maintain it properly it will serve you well.
I have an early 08 250 and I have had to replace the radiator as it was leaking from one of the cores. Other than that, she has been an excellent truck. Tows and plays well. I get around 13 in the City and about 17 on the highway.
