I recently purchased a motor to go into a 1975 F100 shortwheel base c6 trans. My problem is I don't know what this motor is and can not find anyone who can cross refrence it.
On the block it is stamped 8Z606145. Behind flywheel it is stamped 352 24. Can anyone tell me what this motor is or how to find out?
FE motors often times (virtually always) have a 352 cast into them. Do the spark plug holes all slant the same direction or do the front two angle back and the back two angle forward. The later would be consistent with FE. The heads and intake manifold are unique. The exhaust runners flare out to the exhaust manifold. You can see the back side of the bolt hole on the top of the flange. Bolts above and below exhaust port. Valve cover on a FE cover more than the head, they overlap onto the intake manifold. FE's are a Y block design, where the sides of the block extend below the center line of the crank journal. Assumming you have a stock motor, and tranny, (don't look at my truck, I've done swapping) In 75 the small blocks (302,351W) wouldn't have come with a C6. The 360 & 390 (FE motors) did. As did the 460. The bellhousing bolt pattern differs between 460's and FE's The 351M and 400 I don't think were introduced until 77 as the replacement for the 360 & 390 that went out of production in 76. 460's were the only truck motor to come with a factory 4 barrel although many have upgraded their two barrels to 4 (myself included). If you have a two barrel I think that would eliminate a 460. The intake manifold and exhaust flanges, and plugs are the quick ways for me to identify FE motors. If you don't have ID tags it will be difficult to differentiate between a 360 and a 390. They only differ internally. The 390 has a 3.78" stroke and short rods and the 360 has a 3.50" stroke with longer rods. The cranks are diffrent of coarse. I verified my 390 when the heads were off and I could measure the stroke. Check out www.wrljet.com/engines this is a good site to learn about the different Ford V8 families. The older ones anyway, no triton v8 info. unfortunately the pictures of the FE's are car versions that look a little different than your truck might. Some FE motors had a surge tank right above the waterpump next to the distributor. I haven't seen these in the trucks.
This engine is out of a 1973 F100 custom cab. We know it is not the orignal motor because they had to bend the oil filter to get it in. It is giong into A 1975 F100. My 75 has A c6. This engine is a big block. What ever this engine is it appears too have been recently been rebiult. The gasket sealer is still new blue in color. We are hoping that we lucked up. We bought the whole 73 motor and all for 450. All that was wrong when it was parked was the trans. We are looking for a 4barrrel intake for the motor because we have a 4barrel to go on to it. This project is just going why too easy so something has to be wrong.
The new motor is out of a 73 f100 CUSTOM CAB. I know its not the original motor "see big brown truck" above. The one in my 75 is a 360 to me they look just alike but then again I'm not a mechanic. I am a women and I not suppose to know anything according to my husband. Sure is funny that I always the one who knows what is wrong with our vechiles.
Geno, You can't bend a spin on oil filter to get it on, and get it on. The filter may have been bent while the engine was removed. If you see blue gasket material, that could mean only a new gasket.
Sounds like a 360, in both cases. Does the spark plugs look alike on both engines, front two angled back and back two angled forward.
the oil filter was set directly on the swaybar or whatever the bar across the bottom is. It has a dent on it i geuss it is from wear. I went in to the shop and was looking at the engine and front two face rear and back two face the front.
My 390 came with a 2bbl holley, I traded an Edelbrock 351W manifold for a Edelbrock 390 manifold (I thought I was going to buy a 351W) When I got to tearing the motor down I tooke the carb off to reveal a 4bbl manifold. Someone had used an adapter plate to use the holley. So I have a 4bbl FE manifold I don't need. I haven't checked the exhaust crossover cover to see if the underside is rotted. I've heard they do that. It's heavy as sin. The Edelbrock performer 390 is probably over 50 lbs lighter. I believe they cost under $300 I can't remember as I did some trading. I live in WA state.
I was told that if it is a 390 that it would be printede on the pistons and the rods. Is there anyway to see this with out breaking them apart. One sigh of relief is that I have learned that just about all FE motors take the same gasket set. My brother-in-law works for napa and has for nearly 30 years. He has some of the old search manuals, and he thinks he may be able too identify the motor. At this piont it is just a want too know the thing has drove us batty and we will not rest till we know.
If you have the heads off, measure the stroke. Measure the distance from the top of the cylinder to where it bottoms out. A 390 stroke is 3.78" a 360 stroke is 3.50". I just took a ruler and eyeballed where the bottom of the stroke was and used a ruler. It was clearly more than 3.50" and very close to 3.78". It wasn't exactly precise but close enough to answer my question. I did see 30 stamped into the pistons. I'm guessing that the engine had been bored over .030 in a previous rebuild.
We have finally learned what the mystery motor is. It is a 351M. The 351M is suposly the only motor that ford made with off set heads. The heads are off set about 3 inches when you get to mesuring it.
Also this motor has not been long rebuilt. The normal scaring in the cilnders is very light. This motor appears to have been just rebuilt then the trans. went out and I guess they got mad and junked the truck.
Geno, who told you it was a 351M. From what you told us, it can only be an FE. It doesn't take a mechanic to tell these two engines apart. The 351M does not have the spark plug configuration you said it has. Look at the engine from the driver's side of the truck. From your left to right (the truck's front to back) you will see cylinder's # 5, 6, 7, 8. Spark plug #5 is angled to your right. Plug #6 is angled to your right. Plug #7 is angled to your left. Plug #8 is angled to your left. Spark plug wires 6&7 may actually be touching each other at the boot since these plugs are angled toward each other.
If this is the way it is then it can only be an FE. If all 4 plugs on this side are angled toward the rear of the truck (your right) then it is anything but an FE.
Look again at the valve covers. 3 out of the 5 bolts per cover will bolt to the intake manifold. The other two bolts go into the head. Again only an FE is this way. Look again at your other truck-- the one you know has the 360. Except possibly a few nuts & bolts, nothing will interchange if the mystery engine is truely a 351. Look again at the previous replys to your post; I saw no incorrect statements there. It is as if we all actually know what we are talking about. No offence to your brother anyone else who works at a parts store, but I have found them correct only about 75% of the time when it comes to trucks like ours.

I have to agree with much of what has been said so far on this thread. The engine is likely going to be a 360, but could be a 390. I have a little info on my web site about identifying an FE truck motor. The other thing I would recommend is posting the casting numbers from the block (look on the lower passenger side rear of the block behind the starter); also post the casting numbers from the intake manifold and the exhaust manifolds. The numbers your looking for will be in the form of "_ _ _ Z - _ _ _ _ - _"
You can also measure the stroke of the engine without taking it apart to differentiate between different engines in the samne engine family. I have that procedure on my web site too. I hope this helps.
