Ok, so when my truck is under load in 4 wheel drive, it feels and sounds like the drivers side front hub unlocks itself. It will unlock and you can hear the axle still spinning and grinding in the hub. Anyone have a diagram? Also is this possible or is something else wrong?
i have never opened up one of these hubs lol. i have only opened up the warn hubs on a ford ranger, and they are nothing like these. thats why i would like to find a diagram, but i cant find one anywhere.
Go to Autozone.com and create an account. Select your vehicle. Then select repair guides/manuals. Then select Drivetrain >> Front Drive Axle >> Front Hub.
Sounds like you busted the lockout hub. I don't have a diagram but if you pull it off it is pretty straight forward. It is not unusual to break them. When I used to do some serious 4 wheelin I carried an automatic one that I could throw on there to save the day.
I suppose I've never seen a new one either. When I took mine apart, I inspected them to see if I could see any broken meshing spline areas or parts. When I put them back in, I greased everything up pretty good which allowed the hubs to engage and disengage with a much more solid feel.
Here should be everything about the axle, but I bet you have Warn hubs, not the Spicer lockout so there is nothing on the Dana Librarian about them.
If they say Ford on the lockout they were Warn hubs.
And it sounds like you need to replace a lockout hub.
From experience, when you replace the hubs, get the cheap Warn hubs.
It is much easier and cheaper to replace a broken lockout hub than it is to replace an axle.
If you go with the high dollar premium hubs, the axle becomes the weakest link.
Replacing the lockout tomorrow... It finally puked all the way. No 4 wheel drive anymore... Not fun trying to push snow on this nasty icy crap without 4 wheels pushing her...
