I was looking at a site for rebuild kits and it listed 87 threw 94 as S5-42 and 95-97 as S5-47. That said the 5 speed I put in my 85 cameout of a 93, and written on it was ford 95 diesel, like you see when you get parts from a wrecker. My 97 has a S5-42 in it, but I don't know the history on it.
Well that probably answered my question. I have one I pulled out of a 91 that has been in storage since 95. I was hoping it was a 47 but it sounds like ut will be a 42.
Starmilt, drivers side of the transmission, about the shifter location front to back and about 1/3 the way down the side from the top should be an ID plate.
It will have the model number and gear ratios marked on it.
Three different gear ratios in both the 42 and 47 were available.
42 had two torque ratings
4.14 low gear ratio was 433 ft lbs
4.65 low gear ratio was 433 ft lbs
5.72 low gear ratio was 419 ft lbs
47 was 462 for all ratios
Low gear could be 5.72, 5.08 or 4.14.
Thanks Dave I may even look at another one tommorrow.
I'll try to look at mine in the next day or two even though it is the lowest torque I hope they are the 5.72
