We found a 2004 F-150 ELK conversion model pick-up on a lot today. It has 42k on it. VERY CLEAN truck, that they had just traded for. I found NO rock chips, nor door dings. I'm waiting to find out the price.
Was there any problems with these trucks that I should be aware of??
Here's a quick list:
-Serious water leaks (3rd Brake light, A/C Drains to inside..) Take it through a carwash and then look for leaks in the back. The carpet has a rubber liner so you won't feel a damp carpet. You'll need to get under, into the padding.
-Spark plugs get stuck and may break while taking them out. 5.4l
-Clutch packs for limited slip in rear axle can be a bit tight.
-"clunk" after letting off the gas at 30-50mph and then applying gas again
-Brake master cylinder vacuum hose issue
There a couple others, check out the TSB's to get a better idea.
If it were me, I may look for a 2006 or so. You should also have them replace the spark plugs and put the latest engine tune BEFORE you buy it.
My 2004 has had issues, but I'm still glad I have it. Maybe that's because it is paid off.
The truck sounds good. I have 80,000 on my 04 and have never been sorry I purchased it. Only problems I had was the brake master cyclinder going bad. Mine has the small V/8.. If I was buying one with the 5.4 engine I would insist the seller change the plugs and install the newer type, or no sale, due to horrid problems that can turn up. I'd also like to be there at the plug change to be sure it was done and without problems..
