Has anyone that has had the slip/clunk problem had it fixxed? When Im going down the highway, I let off the gas a little bit, just enough for RPMs to drop a little, then I gas it again and it slip/clunks....
Sound familiar to anyone?
Any help is much appreciated.
Yes, I have noticed that on my 2004 FX4 SCrew a couple of times. Seems it is when the truck is in overdrive and slowing down. I hit the gas a bit and notice it clunks as if it was free spooling the driveshaft and suddenly the gas caught up with it. I don't know, but will take it in before warranty goes away if it continues. Probably is nothing. Had cars back in the early overdrive days that did this all the time. It was like it couldn't make up its mind whether to be in overdrive or not. So far I am not that all worked up over the F-150 transmission. I think it is about 90% of the acceleration lag problem. Ford has a better idea!!!
Im taking mine in for the gas tank replacement next week sometime, I will have them look into it. I already had my rear clutch packs replaced, now something else in the drive train is messed up. O well... its still under warrenty.
My truck does this. Around 40 - 50 MPH with low throttle and after its shifted into OD. I just took it to the dealer and had them check it out. They did their diagnostic and supposedly road tested it and were able to sense the slip. They did a computer update but said they were not able to find any problems. It seems to be a little better but it's not gone.
Is there a OD converter lockout on these trucks? I believe it may be the lockout coming in and out. I was pretty disappointed with the dealer, they didn't even try to explain what it may be to me.
Are sure this isn't the splines on the driveshaft hanging up in the transmission. Ford had a service bulletin about this. My 04 slipped and clunked all the time. When I changed the rear u-joint I put a super slippery grease on the splines and the slip/clunk has not returned. Now I suppose the bad u-joint could have contributed to ithe problem, but I feel certain that the slip/clunk was the driveshaft.

mine does the same thing under the same conditions everybody is discribing. i figured its nothing. well its nothing till something breaks. i dont have a warrenty anymore so my fingers are crossed.
I had the same problem. I put new pads on the rear and adjusted rear emergency brake. One of them was dragging a little. That solved my problem. 04 Lariat
Can you tell me how to adjust the emergency brake? I definitely have the slip/clunk, but I also have a popping sound at low speeds. Wish I could solve both and think the E-brake might be part of it. Thanks.
Blariat There's a rubber plug covering the adjuster hole. I used a flat blade screwdriver. The plug and hole are round so a regular brake adjusting won't fit unless it's narrow. Be sure to check your rear disc pads. My rear pads wore out before the front ones.
Unless you have driven with the parking brake on, or had it shaking like a stripper due to the parking brake cable being stuck, the parking brakes shouldn't wear out for a VERY long time.
I should have been a little more clear on the brakes. The emergency brake are drum type pads. My emergency brake pads are like new. The disc pads were worn out. I don't know for a fact which ones were dragging. I had to adjust the emergency brake in a little to get the rotor off. I didn't want to get a bigger mallot. I don't have a clunk anymore and it doesn't shift in and out of overdrive. I had to get new tires, that's how I discovered the rear disc pads were wornout. I was not having any brake problems at all. I'm lazy , I check the front brake pads ever so often if they are ok I don't worry with the rear pads. Now I know better.
yay...mine does the same thing, but only in reverse from a dead stop...6000 miles on the frickin' thing, and it'll drive me nuts until I figure it out...grrrr
