I just bought a 94 aerostar xl sport as a winter beater. It has 103,000 KM and was well maintained. Is there anything I need to be aware of, as I have never had an aerostar before? thanks george
what engine?
change the ATF if there is any chance it is old. weak tranny if not given loving careful maintenance.
if it is a 4.0L engine, make sure the coolant is changed every 2 years with fresh antifreeze and distilled water and new thermostat. they corrode, overheat easily and damage engine.
the lower body is a rust bucket around salted roads if not washed often and treated.
they can be a long lived rig with great road cruising ride if given service.
Thanks for the tips, I'll check that. It has the 3.0 V6. I'm only the third owner and the 2 previous owners were both seniors. The first vacationed in Florida every winter, so he never drove it in bad weather, he second owners have rust proofed it since they bought it in 2003, so there' s very little rust. I counted 4 little rust spots on drivers side just above the running board. I just popped the wheels off to check the brakes, need new front discs and pads and calipers, the rear brakes are good. I noticed a small exhaust leak at the manifold on passenger side is this common and is it a difficult repair?
For new brakes, get the ceramic, worth every penny if installed properly with good quality rotors to match. I have run mine for almost three years now at 30,000 plus per year.
I'm the 3rd owner of mine as well. Change the fluids regularly (since I tow a 2000lb trailer, I do the transmission fluid every year) and if you tow or haul a lot of heavy goods, get another Transmission cooler - for less than $100 it's money well spent, since transmissions can run you $2000 for a rebuilt one and the existing cooler only just does the job - add a load and a mountain pass and you're asking for it, IMHO!
...and hang around and ask questions for any problems that may come up. Lots of knowledgeable people here.
I bought my '92 with the intention of just having it for a couple of years...7 years later I still have it, and it's been quite reliable (with the one exception of the transmission bursting its seals at 290,000kms - that isn't bad service, I figure). Best $2,500 I've spent!
