Slow crank, warm temperatures.

I have been having an issue of late (last week) of my truck cranking really slowly when trying to start. It will start, just takes a little while. Batteries both check out at 700 CCA, and the amp draw checked with a clamp on amp meter shows 750 amps when cranking and 85 amps when just the glow plugs are activated. The terminals have been cleaned and have not voltage drop at the terminals.

Is the started drawing to many amps? Is there somewhere else I should look?

BTW when i say warm temperatures I mean 50 to 60 degrees F.

Your starter is going out, best guess with what you described. Happened to me also. Usually taking the starter down and having it tested is a waste of time because they can't do a load test. Hang around for a while and some others will chime in and give you good information on possible upgraded (and less expensive) starter(s). IMO reconditioned is probably not a good idea.

Sounds like your starter. I just changed mine about a month ago. Was having the same symptoms as yours. These motors need to spin up quite fast to start. Change your solenoid while your at it, they cost about thirty bucks at most parts stores. I left mine after my starter change and it crapped out about two weeks later. It's a straight forward fix, just use a long extension on the top bolt of the starter.

Yeah that was what I was thinking. So the starters for these trucks don't come with new solenoids on them?

checked out getting the starter rebuilt... 200 is a little much, especially when I can buy a new DB for 120.

Thats pretty cheap. I think I paid close to $180 for a new starter a few years back.

We typically don't start rebuilding starters unless they are on 8 liters' are larger.
