I am getting my truck ready for a big trip hauling a BIG trailer. I just had the ZF5 rebuilt and got it back in this evening, also changed the rear diff fluid. The truck doesnt seem to be running real good so I checked the DTC codes with my SuperChips tuner. I got P0113, 0344, and 0234. This is intake air temperature, camshaft position sensor intermittent and Turbocharger Boost Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance (not sure what this means). I am assuming I should go ahead and replace the CPS as it is a known culprit for failing, and possibly this is what is causing a slight surge that I can feel under load/acceleration. What it the boost sensor issue? Also on a recent trip I was feeling the hesitation/surge on a long hill at about 70 mph, I had it floored and the fuel filter light flashed for a brief moment, only quick enough for me to read it and then off again. I have only been able to get it to do it twice. The fuel filter doesnt have that many miles on it, I have bought another one to replace it but I didnt feel that that would change anything. I was suspecting the lift pump as a possibility and while looking at it I noticed a fuel leak at the banjo fitting and tightened it. After tightening the banjo bolt it seemed to slow down or even stop, I will determine tomorrow if the weep hole is leaking on the lift pump. Is checking the pressure at the shrader valve good enough to determine if I am getting a good fuel supply?
If you knew what your fuel pressure was before the issues, I would think it be a good way to determine a leak, but if your unsure of what you should be getting, then who knows.
If the Banjo isn't leaking, then you just might have a weak FPR spring and need to do the BB mod to get the fuel pressure back up.
I duno about the turbochargerboostsensor... MAP sensor? heh.
I thought that was the only sensor associated with the Turbo. *shrugs*
Go to the international dealer and get your CPS, they are only 25 dollarsish. And are better than the ford ones.
I am going to get a new cps, I have been running on borrowed time anyways. I should also mention that I have an exhaust leak at the manifold/head, I was trying to tighten it last night and broke a bolt that was waiting to fail (was cracked 75% of the way through). How much power loss occurs from a leak?
I just changed the cps and the oil, I am going to get some fuel pressure readings and then take it for a spin. Also just cleaned the valley to check for leaks. I will report back with my fuel pressure and then discuss shimming the fpr. I will also get some pictures of my load.
Went and picked up the trailer, seemed to do ok. On the way out to get it I was feeling the truck out and at 75 it would bring on the fuel filter light. I also checked my fuel pressure at the fpr and it was pegging my 60 psi standard guage, what should it be at? The truck is also doing some surching/lurching that has allways been there, is this a turbo problem or fuel, computer, where should i look.
Pics of whats going in the trailer to come later.
You might have some air in the fuel. There is a little hole on the drivers side (inside the filter canister). Inside that hole is a screen. The purpose of the screen is to filter, unfiltered diesel, and allow air to vent back to the tank. If the screen becomes clogged the air can't escape. Take a q-tip, with the cotton off and gently scrape the screen.
Other possibility is the sensor (fuel filter restriction) itself. They are known to leak right at the electrical connection and is quite common source of fuel leaks. Don't expect gushes of fuel as it is usually just a drip .. drip thing. The sensor is the top one on the driver side on the filter canister. I got mine from IH dealer and was about $25. If you replace it be careful not to over tighten as you can crack the filter housing.
The mechanical fuel pump is a two stage. It pumps from the tank into the filter canister at about 7PSI. The filtered fuel then goes back to the pump and is increased to 50-60 PSI then on to the heads. So, the low pressure side might still be bad on the pump. You could try measuring the fuel pressure again but go WOT to tax it a bit.
60 PSI is excellent.
How much does that trailer weight empty, just curious?
I am not sure what it weighs empty, we are looking at having 3 vehicles in it and 4-6 people in the cab, our buddy with the toterhome backed out on us at the last minute and that is why I am trying to whip my truck into shape. I expect to have a gross of around 26-28k so I need all of the power I can get.
I plan to dig into the fuel filter, bowl and fpr tommorrow. I just recently cleaned the screen but while searching i came across a thread where the guy completely took apart his fpr and cleaned it. When i cleaned my screen it was completely covered with black material, I am not sure how the truck was getting any fuel. Is there a good way to check if my lift pump is bad on the low pressure side?
