I have a 74 F100 with a 6.4 390. It has been acting up and I checked with a mechanic friend and he said to either rebuild or replace the carb. I need to know for sure what carbs will work. Do I have to just go OEM or can I get something else. Also what is a climatic choke? Is it better than an electric? The carb on it now is a two barrel. I believe it is the Ford 2100
Rebuild what ya got. The only reason to replace would be if the throttle shaft in the bottom of the carb is wore out and causing a vacuum leak around it. If I remember right the Climatic choke uses a tube out of the intake and a heater hose routed close to warm up the choke and release it. The electric justs releases the choke a little faster usually.
I agree with everything moose said. Climatic means it uses fresh air heated up by an exhaust crossover to heat the choke. Electric chokes use an electric heating element. Personally, I prefer climatic chokes because they use your actual engine temperature, so the choke heats up at the same rate as the engine. With a fully electric choke, the choke heats up in a set amount of time regardless of how cold the engine is. That means more adjustment on your part.
I have a '74 F-250 with the same engine. It has the original 2100. If my new float and choke pull off get here today I'm going to rebuild it tonight. This is my first carb rebuild, and my most extensive auto repair to date. I hope it goes well. I may have to come here for questions.

Thanks. When I took my carb off I was wondering why there was what I thought was a vacuum line coming off of the choke.
