Cant get any action when trying to start....any ideas?

On my 2nd test drive, I went 3 miles to get some gas. Everything ran good all the way to the pump, actually cranked on the first try when I left the house. Right after fueling up, I could not get it to crank. Wont turn over, wont even try to turn over. Tried to jump it, got nothing. replaced the solenoid, nothing again. All I get is every now and then a small pop noise from the solenoid, but I never get anything on the starter. I charged the battery just in case but it didn't help. Could I have messed anything up when I changed the alternator? I have not had any probs with it turning over before this incident. Like I said I'm new to this so any suggestions to check out will be a BIG help.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
Try moving the shift lever up and down (assuming column shift automatic, as you didn't give any info) while turning the key to start and FOOT ON THE BRAKE. These column shifters/neutral safety switches are fairly notorious for being out of adjustment due to slop and wear. If you need more detailed help, you really need to provide us with year/model/engine/trans/etc information.
Good Luck
Gene

Well I figured it out..........Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most obvious and hardest to find. The positive terminal must have had corrosion between the cable and the terminal. I found it by jumping the battery to the solenoid, then like magic it cranked right up! I should have guessed it because I had a similar prob with a 97 car.
