hey guys i know this has been posted over and over again. ive checked all posts.just need a little help please. 1990 f150 5.8 4x4 e40d. dumping fluid out the front BAD. i pulled and replaced torque convertor with a reman. also replaced the the seal at the back of the trans.( front pump seal?) old seal looked good but u never can tell. so i put all back in and its still dumping. what did i miss? what should i have done? is there any other gaskets or seals or anything? i was getting a code 62 when this happened and im assuming it got really hot which is what i thought originaly happened. how does fluid flow into and back out of torque convertors? thru the shaft into the convertor but how does it return?any ideas? im gonna pull it again this weekend. thanks
Mine was doing that to, before I did my zf swap, which is the best thing I ever did to my truck. But anyways, ya when I put in the e4od that was in my truck I replaced that seal. That was about 5 months ago, then 2 weeks ago when we did the zf swapIi looked at the front seal of the e4od and it wasnt leaking. Mine was leaking where from in-between the front pump and the case. I couldnt figure out why the heck that would leak. but that is probaly what your looking at. I guess take the trans to shop when it is out and they will seal up the front pump. or I guess you could try it yourself.
The front seal (called the converter seal) is a bad material from the factory that will distort with heat. Many times when this starts, it will only leak when the trans is hot, as it gets worse it will leak all the time. The bad seal is gray in color, you want either a blue or black seal.
make sure if u pull it back out, the spring stayed in the inner lip of the seal. Its easy to knock the spring out when u put the seal in. I pack the back grove of the seal where the spring is with grease before install just so that wont happen. also check the vent to see if it is pluged. should have a hose on it that runs back toward the t-case. make sure it is not pluged or pinched.
ok guys . i pulled trans and transfer case again. seal looked good but u could see the leak running down from the bottom of the seal. i pulled that seal spring still was on it and things looked good. no ripped rubber or any burs on the torque converter. leak is definatly coming from the seal though. so i got another seal and cleaned everything and put it all back together and started it up and after about 1-2 minutes started pouring fluid out AGAIN. shut truck off and u could hear fluid or pressure type of sounds from transmission like it was trying to vent or something. or maybe it was just fluid draining back down. what could be causing this leak? could it be building up pressure that quick forcing fluid thru the seal? if so what should i do? there is no rubber hose for venting but on the top of trans there is what looks like a vent it has a cover on it that twists but doesnt come off.when it first did this( dumping fluid) i had just driven it after putting dr.trannys shudder fix in it and she shifted and drove great. then wham fluid every where. and truck would go forward no matter what gear it was in. even reverse.(i figured it mite be a limp mode setting causing it to only go forward when low on fluid) was getting a code 62 so i pulled out trans and replaced seal and torque converter with a rebuilt. but still dumping fluid. any ideas?
