Axle Swap

I am in the process of restoring and customizing a 86 f150, and was wondering if anyone has had experience with swapping the rear axle for a later year model? Is this possible? Say for a 97-04 f150 to my 86?

I think so, like 5 5x114 or the like - why would you want to do the swap - just curious.

The main reason for contemplating the swap was because I am changing the transmission to a manual 5 speed with a different engine, and I wanted rear disc brakes. I wasn't sure if I could get a newer model axle from a salvage yard with the disc-brakes (lines also) already on it. Then just upgraded to master-cylinder and the front brakes with it.
If it was possible, it would might be cheaper than buying the conversion kit.

Stick w the drums. The disc brakes do not stop any better in a truck. They just weigh too much to be effective. Thats why Semi's still use drums.

I thought of doing the same thing, until I found out the axle was going to cost me $400.00 for a '03 F150 2wd 8.8.... I said Nope. Drums are the better way probably.
