I have an 89 f150. Granted it does have 260,000+miles on it, it is in very good condition. The valve cover gaskets were recently changed and after installed my truck has been spittin and puttering. It shifts fine but when ever i get to around 20-45 mph it struggles to go. But if i give it some more gas it drops down in gear and runs good. Above and beyond that mph wise it runs good going down the higway. It is an automatic, today I put a new fuel filter in it but didn't seem to help. It has a 5.0 and is extended cab with dual tanks. Maybe its the fuel pressure regulator, but don't even know where to begin. Oh, and the fuel guage don't work cause I ran out of gas the other day, while the back tank was still full it wouldn't let me use it. so i had to walk to the gas station get some gas then take and fill her up. Thanks for your time and suggestions!!
yes it still has the cats. and I will take the covers off and check the rockers out. You don't think it might be a fuel pressure issue would it? Would changing the fuel pressure regulator help?
whats the rpm range where it spits and sputters is it a full blown mis fire check stupid crap first like the plugs and and cap distributor cap might be cracked
Check to be sure your converters in the exhaust are not stopping up. Get someone to sit in and hold rev around 2-3grand and make sure you have a nice steady flow out of the pipe if not your cats are stopping up. Hope this helps. Always try and check things that dont cost you money to check first.
