I have an '05 Excursion manufactured in July of '04 and mine was a bitch to see the numbers due to the amount of insulation and other stuff in the way.
The "removing the fuse panel cover" and looking up to see the code (as mentioned elsewhere) doesn't work on my Ex as there's too much stuff in the way. Like 05ExcursionatorCA, removing the "purse hanger" hook panel was the way to go. I also removed the cup holder (two screws in front and two from underneath with the cup holder extended after purse hanger is removed) for ease of sighting and manipulation of insulation.
In my case (if you have a different year Excursion, your mileage may vary) what you're looking for is a black box with a white sticker and Grey, Green and Blue colored wiring harness plugs going into it. See pic for some idea of the location.
The sticker is upside down. In this orientation, the the 5 digit number is on the top left of the white sticker and is of course upside down also. The best way to light it is via shining a flash light up through the drivers foot well (or getting someone else to).
I needed to move cables and white insulation out of the way to even see my box, let alone the code. If you've got one a borescope or digital inspection camera would make the job a whole lot easier. Hope this helps someone out.
In the image below, the 12G cleaning rod points to the location - behind that white insulation.

For those who have gone up in the dash to look at the numbers (via mirror or camera), is this roughly what you've looked at? Just curious if this is the door code or something else:
