For anyone who read the fe preformance posts, you know that I dont know whether my engine is a 352 or a 390. My question is if I get a new thermostat what temp should I get and does it help any to get a hotter or colder one than stock?

I have a 390 4-v C-6. I went the 195 route and found some benefit in the winter months. Thermal efficiency thing. This was with the Stock cast iron manifold 10 deg advance timing. Summer months seemed to be a Problem as Not all sections of the system are at/ below 212deg. (heavy overflow in the catch can, increased thermal expansion).13 lb preasure cap....
Then when I went to the edlebrock aluminum manifold/carb route. I went back to the 180 thermostat ( Large Diam ). Some have the smaller Diam. and Iam not sure what applies and where.
So far the Warm Up is fine and the engine seems to be more stable and even as the outside temperature goes up.
Chris,
I run a 195 degree thermostat in my 66 f250, custom cab with original 352, 3core rad. Haven't had a single problem. Stays on the 1/4 mark year round .
