I have the above mentioned truck with a 6 cyl. and 4 spd tranny.....I need to know if a V8(400, I thiink) out of a '79 Lincoln Towncar(w/automatic) will fit in it......Conversion from auto, torque converter etc. to manual, clutch, pressure plate etc. possible??? Haven't thought of such since the 60's, so am ignorant again.....Can anyone inform me of possibility and difficulty factor, potential problems, etc.....
Thanks in advance

You did not exacly explain what you want to do, If you are asking if the 460 will fit, with the current trans it will not. The 300 uses a small bell housing and the 460 uses a large bell housing. The oil pan would also need to be changes as it would not fit the truck, you would also need to change engine towers and all the accessories. The brackets need to come from a truck. The main motor 460 is the same as the truck motor. But the accessories are different.

If you would like further info, email me or call me

Parts should be plentiful for this, since most v-8 4x4's in 79 were 351-400's. Try to find somebody who swapped in a 460, and they may have all the old parts from their 400 in their garage. I don't have any because I swapped out a Cleveland for a 460. The tranny is difficult to find because the 400 and 460 share the same bolt pattern. As for motor mounts, accessory brackets, etc. try you local junkyards, they should have a pile of that stuff. E-mail me if I can help you any further.

You need to specify which motor, my Dad has a 400 in his 78 MK 5. As for tranny's the 400 and the 460 both have the same bellhousing pattern that differs from the 300. Taking the C6 auto with the motor would be an easier swap. You would need the steering column from an automatic (be aware that power steering and non are different lengths) I have had no problem finding these steering columns. The 400 and the 460 differ in motor mounts and engine perches. Try going to www.wrljet.com for engine family articles. A 400 is a Cleveland family motor, it's valve cover has 4 bolts on top and 4 on the bottom. A 460 is a Big block or 385 family or I've seen refered to as Lima family. It's valve cover has 3 bolts on top and 4 along the bottom. You also need to find out whether the v8 you have is externally balanced and how. The 300 is internally balanced. I don't know about the balance of either the 400 or the 460 but I suspect they are externally balanced. Finding a bellhousing and flywheel for the 400 shouldn't be tough as there were 400 with manuals availible stock in the F series trucks, a 460 may be tough to get a flywheel for because they weren't availible from the factory with a manual. Somehow it can be done (I've seen a wrecking yard towtruck F350 with a custom 4sp installation) I believe there was a recent thread from someone who tried to convert to a 460 manual and had clearance problems. Find out which v8 you have.
