If you are referring to the stickers on the pumps that still say LSD, I don't think they still have LSD coming into the tanks, it's just what was left is still mixing enough in there that it hasn't gotten low enough in percentage for them to be able to swap the stickers. Either that or they just haven't swapped the stickers yet. I know 3 out of the 5 stations I get diesel still have LSD stickers on the pump, but I haven't asked inside because the hop head working the register doesn't even know that diesel has different formulations, so why bother.
Refiners haven't had to quit refining it yet; off-road applications can still use it until at least 2012, perhaps 2014. And given the number of stations still selling it (at least according to the pumps), I'm wondering. My ancient beastie loves the stuff.
EPA has quietly dropped mandates before. The Low-NOx rebuilds that were required as part of the 2002 Consent Decree (that moved the 2004 standards up to 2002), were VERY quietly allowed to die, when EPA found out that very few people were doing them, and that their rebuild mileage criteria were woefully inadequate. I found out about it quite by accident, long after I'd had mine done.
it may still be available in some states, but here in the north east it has been 15 PPM ULSD only for at least 2 years.
the only difference between on road and off road fuel here is the red dye added to off road to show it is non taxed.
Many of the "off road applications" for diesel fuel are actually tax exempt on road users that are also required to use ULSD.
Because ULSD has become the "one size fits all" fuel, dyed or undyed, chances are its ULSD regardless of what the sticker on the pump says.
Here in corn country, even though we buy in bulk from a jobber whos primary customers are tax exempt "off road" users, we have not been able to get LSD since the summer of 2006
I don't know about now but a year ago you could get on flying Js website and find out where lsd was available. Supposedly they are required to change the stickers on the pumps when the tanks go to ulsd.
Note that 16ppm fuel must still be called "LSD", since it exceeds the 15ppm spec. I suspect most of the still available LSD fuel is in the 100-50 ppm range. But it's still interesting to see it available, whatever "strength" it is.
(and yes, Flying J's website, Pilot's website, and TA's website all still list LSD fuel availability. My seeing this is the reason for the thread. )
Still selling here in the Phoenix area. It's not mis-labeled either it is LSD not ULSD. I have been wondering how long it will keep being for sale here in AZ?? There are even big stickers on the pumps that say "not for use in 2007 and later Diesel engines"
