Recently rebuilt carb on 1973 F350 -390 motor, stock 2bbl intake & stock motorcraft 2 bbl carb . The rebuild went good and the truck starts right up,idels perfect, runs well with a little hesitation off a dead start. The problem starts when I turn the truck off then try to restart in a few minutes,it wont start until you floor the gas pedal and crank the motor about 15 seconds. It will start right up emediatley after shutdown if I dont give it any gas, but once I wait more than a few minutes, it wont start unless I floor the gas pedal./////////// any ideas are appreciated.
If flooring the gas pedal while cranking gets it started, could be that the carb is slowly leaking gas from the bowl into the intake. When you go to start it after a while, the engine is flooded and the bowl is dry. To verify this, drive the truck awhile and stop in front of your house. Then pull the carb off the motor and look on the bottom for gas.
I am just starting to learn more about carbs, so I not to sure on this, but it could be the choke needs some adjustment or your accelorator pump isn't working right.
Just rebuild 2 carbs in the last few days and was wondering about this little flapper valve on the front of the carb. when it suppose to cover the hole and the reason. A long way from any expert on carbs. Also the was the mention of gas leaking out of the bowl and into the intake. What must be done to correct this. My 68 was doing this also. That is hard starting sometimes.
might check the float level. , they will fill up the bowl too high and it will run over and flood. short term but evaporate long term. this will also put gas into your oil.
