what do you think? would/can you install a methanol injection system on a non intercooled engine? ive got a 90 idi, i installed a factory turbo system from a 94 idi. ive got a intercooler im going to install in time. i was just wondering if i could, or should install a methanol injection system now. in time i would love to install propane system but the price is crazy right now. ive got a million other things i need to do first. any help or advice would be great
I haven't but I've seen wrie ups on it and guys have good results. The ones I've seen didn't use an intercooler, which was the reason why they did the washer fluid injection to begin with.
This should get you started: Splash Water Methanol Injection
ok, so do i need to tap a hole in the housing that sits on my intake from the turbo as far up the neck as it can go, or right where the factory hole is? im running a boost gauge outta there now, but i can tap another hole for that later.
Just a suggestion I would try doing some upgrades to get my boost to at least 10 before I went with the meth inj syatem. You might find the power is more than enough for your needs. And yes I know there is no substitution for POWER and SPEED.
its no so much speed for me, its all about lowering my egt's big time. i havent gotten a pyrometer installed yet but thats next on my list. i pull a 2 car trailer over "the grape vine" california guys who what that is. its a long stretch of hills. 7% being the steepest. i usually pull over after every big hill to let everything cool down for a bit. idle my truck at 1k and wait for about 4 minutes til i tackle the next. i am planning on getting the ats downpipe for my baby. that should give me a little extra psi.
I don't know what you have done.
But the stock turbo outlet and down pipe has it castrated. 3 and 1/2 minimum exhaust.
Personally if I had to go to the expence to ghange exhaust I would go 4".
Turbo injectors And turn the pump up along with a good cold air intake.
And you can adjust the waste gate on the turbo.
so far, its factory. its a 90 with a 94 turbo with the upgraded compressor wheel. 3" exhaust and i turned up the pump. i havent found any cold air intakes for the idi turbo so i was thinking of building my own. i really want the ats downpipe, but thats gonna take a little bit of time. and there isnt a waste gate.
If it is a factory turbo it had a waste gate, and you need the downpipe to even start getting it's potential any good exhaust shop can fix you up way cheaper than ats will, but to get all its potential you also need the turbo outlet that has to come from ats.
Do you have a pyro and have you turned the fuel up any.
no pyrometer yet, thats next for sure since i do a lot of heavy hauling its a must. i turned my pump up when i installed the turbo, just a little more then a quarter turn.
get the pyro before you do anything, you may also want to put a temp gauge on your charge pipe just so you can see the drop when the juice starts flowing...personally I like to have any chem cooling done as far from the actual engine intake as possible...give a little more time for distibution and mixing.
It will drop your egt's, but keep in mind you will want to tune the whole thing as a system...for any given power output you should be able to find a sweet spot between boost, chem cooling, fuel, and temps. one of the biggest thing for running the vine (I am familiar with it, used to run van nuys to santa clara 3x per week) will be keeping your charge air as cool as possible without making it "wet", another thought would to revise the turbo setup...from what I have studied the factory setup leaves alot to be desired when it comes to boost delivery, and its ability to maintain it....
