Where can I find the switch that activates the reverse lights. I've looked on the steering column and i dont see any wires or any where to connect wires. Its a 73 f100 ranger. Any help appreciated.
I believe '72 was the last year for the column mounted switch, but it was under the hood close to the shift lever, not inside the cab.Yours will be on the transmission, around the shift shaft for an auto,or,near the tailshaft,on the back of the case for a manual.Be aware that a neutral safety in sometimes incorporated into the same switch.Applying power to the wrong wire may cause the starter to crank the engine. My scematics show a BLK/RED wire{runs to rear of truck} and another BLK/RED with a WHT/BLK piggy backed{ign. power in} at the switch.Good luck.

Standards and backup light switches:
On the column shift std. the switch is in the engine compartment on the firewall. For the 4 spd. hd transmission, it is on the top of the transmission case.
Backup/neutral safety switches:
The automatics had the switch on the side of the transmission working off the shift linkage there. I don't know if all are like that, but the later ones are.
My 78 F-100 stepside taillights have weak directionals - they stop blinking if you step on the brake - the rear license plate light blinks with the hazard flashers...can't get the backup lights to come on consistently... ....I unplugged the rear taillight wiring assembly to have the truck painted ...this all started happening after I reconnected the wires - mine has the taillights that stick out from the short bed 2 wires: one prong plug and a two prong plug - so it's pretty easy to plug them back in as before - Is the steering column directional switch going up..? I'm not good with electrical bugs - any suggestions would be appreciated....
Okay, for the backup switch, auto or manual makes a big difference ... my 73 4x4 auto has the neutral safety/backup light switch on the steering column under the dash, about 3" up from the firewall probably ... well that's where its supposed to be anyway, but the little pin that sticks out of the steering column broke off, so the switch is just hanging under the dash wired into the P position ...
As for the flakey backup/turnsignal stuff, check for a ground wire, likely when it got painted the wire got put on with paint around it so there's not a good place for the current to ground to, so it just grounds through all the lights ...

Ok on my 72 F-250 there is an Actuator bracket on the steering column UNDER the dash on the column(slide switch).
Its held on by 2 screws. Now there is an `ARM` thing that is stamped metal that snaps into the Rotating part of the steering column, I know because mine is broken and the backup lights will not work and this controls the Neutral start circuit. the actuating thing was 15.00 from ford dealer
