I think it may have been '37 when Ford went to dash mounted push buttons. But other makes continued them into the '40's. We have a '41 Plymouth truck that uses the floor mounted starter.
Check again.. It actually may be the high-beam switch. When I pulled mine (47) the wires were not heavy gauge and I believe fed into the harness which contained the headlight wiring. I wacked it all about 10 years ago but I still have switch. I'll look at it again but I think it had 3 wires, not two.
If it's mounted on the floor, by the kick panel and firewall, it's your highbeam switch, as John mentioned. Ford abandoned the floor mounted starter switch by the '40's. The starter button is mounted on the dash, just to the right of the instruments.
I checked again,it is a floor mounted starter switch to the right of gas pedal, high beam switch is by kick panel, may a 42 still have the floor mounted switch?
That's right, there is a footrest on the floors near the accel pedal, it's attached to the transmission cover on the floor. That could be what it is. Have you looked under the truck to see if there are any wires coming from what you think might be a floor mounted starter?
