I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I searched for the last half hour, and I can't find anything. Sorry in advance.
What kind of fluid should I put in my 4 spd manual with a granny gear? It looks and smells like burned ATF that came out, but it stained my hands yellow... The old chilton's manual that I have that covers multiple trucks says to use Ford Manual Trans. Lubricant, but I really don't want to go to the dealer for it, and I don't really think I need it; there has to be something off the shelf that is equivalent or better. Local parts stores say put 80-90 gear lube in it, but that's their opinion, it's not on their computers; to me it seems too heavy.
What say you great enthusiasts? Thanks in advance for your help!
I have 75W90 synthetic gear oil in mine. I changed the old fluid for preventive maintenance and noticed that the transmission shifted with considerably less effort as a result.

I'm just afraid of the gear oil being too thick and not properly lubricating the gear box. I live in the Poconos in PA and it's cold up here.
I grew up in northern michigan, never had a problem with 75-90. the oil will lubricate just fine. you'd be at more risk of problems running too thin of an oil than too thick. they make an 85W140 weight synthetic. i ran that too for a short while just cause i got it for free (buddy's dad owned a shop and had to dump some material...) i didn't have a problem with that either.
Well thanks for all of the input guys, looks like I'll run gear oil. It's funny though, the ford dealers I called said they didn't know or said to put trans fluid in it if that's what came out. I didn't think our trucks were THAT out of date.
Like most counter people, they are too lazy to look it up. It much easier to say "I don't know". They need to get you out of the way so they can sell someone a vehicle or some parts so they can make some money.
